The Farmers by ISignRob The Farmers by ISignRob
Personal project. The sketch is available some deviations before. You can see it here: [link]

Robots are created to make wars instead of humans. But things run out of control, and mankind itself is in danger. So, a great effort is started to contain the threat of the robots, but without destroying them...they are reprogrammed to do basic activities, so the remaining humans could restart their lives.

60% done in Painter with a Wacom Bamboo Fun, 30% graphite on paper and 10% in Photoshop.

Comments and critiques are very welcome

:icongimmefeedback:
I'm planning to do a series of drawings like this one, with robots helping in early civilization tasks, like looming, fishing, blacksmiting etc., and since it's one of my first robot designs, I really want to do more complex and interesting designs to the other tasks...Could it be steampunk? Transformers? Jetsons? I want to hear you =D And also about the wheat field, how could I make it look better?

Cheers!!

UPLOADED: Many many thanks for all the feedbacks I've got and for the Daily Deviation! You guys rock! =D

UPLOADED 2: You can see the next installment of the series, The Fshermen, here =D

The Farmers by *resenhista
The suggester says: A futuristic, almost post-apocalyptic world where, instead of robots trying to destroy the humans, they've been reprogrammed into simpler tasks to help the remaining humans live together in peace. Visually stunning and eerie at the same time. ( Suggested by Raithe and Featured by gucken )

Love it! Particularly the added farmer in the background...

When humans are dead the robots will grow grain for fuel....or will just continue and over-run the stockpiles....

That should be a fine idea...the research for alternate power sources!
Who knows, actually it's you guys who are about to create a whole plot involving these robots, and you are doing well ;)

Very interesting piece you have here. Adhering to your back story, I think it would be an unwise choice for humans to give the ex-war-mongering robots tools such as sickles and scythes, which this piece brings out the ever-present danger of their programming being reset.

Exactly ;)

People all around DA was talking about all sorts of cool ideas for the past and future events, it was amazing to see that kind of mobilization because of one single work :la: I realized that I should do various tasking robots (the next one will be The Fishermen)...and, maybe, I should turn this into a graphic novel, I don't know...I have plenty of time to think carefully about that =D

Thank you very much for you words!

This is a really great picture; reminiscent of Jean Francois Millet's paintings. Expressive of a certain hope, but an ominous feeling at the same time. I think the wheat field looks fine---perhaps make the stalks more flexible and the ripened grains more pronounced? The only thing about the field that seems out of place is the fact that the foreground is completely barren. If the scene is supposed to be farmers "resting" from their work, should the open patch around them be filled with cut stalks? Or is the hard, packed ground supposed to echo the wars and devastation for which the robots were originally created, and which perhaps the wheat fields were planted to recover?

That's the only thing that really jumped out at me. I also wonder, how big are the robots supposed to be? I assume the scythe held by the standing bot is turned at an angle, but it still looks kind of small in comparison, or else on a very long pole.

Nice work, anyway! I'm definitely curious to see your continuations on the theme.

Thank you!! I only knew Jean François Millet last month when trying to learn pastels, can you believe that? Oh holy ignorance...lol

So, I believe the catch in the wheat field lies in flexibility...too bad I took reference from still photographs, I never saw a wheat field for real...there's no such thing where I live =/

So, as for the barren foreground is really reminescent from the war and devastation, as you supposed, and the wheat field you see there is like the Crop One or something ;)

Ah and...about their size, well they're supposed to be human-sized, maybe a little bigger to make them more threatening...maybe it's the pole of the scythe that is very long, it was supposed to be a farming tool (i don't know its name in English), but the scythe proved to raise more doubts about their nature (war x salvation) ;)

I feel happy to know you liked my work!! And thank you for such a comment! And...sorry for taking so long to reply

Wicked! Reminds me a bit of Poul Anderson's short story "Epilog", about a group of space travellers visiting an abandoned Earth in the far future, to find their leftover machines had "evolved" into an entire robotic ecosystem, including sentient robots in a primitive, hunter-gatherer society.

Anyway, I love the design of the robots, especially the head (and hat).
