Dark Halls XI by Iron-Eye Dark Halls XI by Iron-Eye
This is part of my ongoing study/series/project involving local church architecture. If you enjoy this please feel free to check out the gallery with the rest of the project here Dark Halls Project

We where trucking up the coast on our way to take some pictures of the beach and a really cool wreck of a ship *watch this space . When we found this totally isolated church, It was set back off the road by about 1/4 mile with nothing but a overgrown dirt track leading to it. We managed to park up near by and hiked up to the church, to which we found the site still open. The door was ajar, dust and leaves where everywhere and a handful of coins where on the side table. It looked like it rarely saw use but obviously someone local had attempted to maintain it to a degree. It has to be one of the most surreal places I've been to in a while. A sort of abandoned but not abandoned place.

Anyway enjoy the picture - I'm still learning so all comments and critiques are very very much welcome :)

The light divides this image into two parts: the centre window, including the area it illuminates, and the darker majority of the image. The window dominates the image and the light from it highlights the two centre pews.
This part seems warmer, more welcoming. Strangely, the angle of the light makes the altar less noticeable - it can take a short while to realise it´s there.
The darker part is heavy, cold, almost like a castle or fortress. The angle makes the walls look unnaturally thick and pushes the lit area away from the viewer.
Including the foreground arch adds a sense of completeness but reduces the effect of the light from the window.
Overall, the image is educational but foreboding. An image to inform but perhaps mostly for specialists.

The lighting effect is rathser amazing, but it does take out of the fact that is is "Dark Halls" I think that it would be better if the light was still there (you have to see somehow) but was dimmer. The shading job and texturing of wood, floor, and walls is amazing, but it is hard to tell how this is supposed to be dark halls. It looks too me like a regular old church. I feel like the dark themes of this picture needed to be emphasized a little bit more. Still, the technique you used to pull this off is amazing!

Such an incredible story, I would like to see more pics of the door, the leaves on the floor and the entrance.

I did take a few other shot's but i try to just have one or two to say what i want to say about a location rather than risk repeating myself artistically. I hate to be dull.

Amazing shot! Your photo has just the right amount of light to show all the details of the interior, while conveying a sense of creepiness and foreboding.

The shot is very good. In where the church is located?. To not be entirely abandoned, it is in good condition.
