(Music: Sowulo - Samhain)

Blessed Samhain 🎃💀🍂 My Wheel of the Year series is finally finished!

Samhain is one of the main holidays of the Wheel of the Year, which is celebrated at the end of October. It marks the end of the harvest, while also being a beginning of winter or the "dark half" of the year. It is also a celebration of veneration of deceased ancestors. During Samhain, the spirits of the dead come to visit their living relatives - people leave the doors open for them and kindle guiding lights on the windows and in front of the houses, also prepare special food. Samhain is a dark time, a time when the earth ceases to belong to man, spirits and magic beings become masters of it.

It is also worth mentioning that modern Halloween is a much later tradition, related to the Christian period (about the 8th century), the name itself is a Scottish abbreviation for English All-Hallows-Eve. The holiday was originally from Irish culture and became widely known only by the 19th century, thanks to the mass commercial culture of the USA and Canada. The main ideological difference of Halloween is that under the influence of Christianity, people stopped honoring the dead and no longer sought a meeting with the supernatural, conversely tried to guard themselves against it. Sídhe and other magical creatures turned into evil demons and spirits that can harm the living. The guiding lights were replaced by turnip lantern (later pumpkins) with ominous faces to scare away evil spirits and drive them from the house on this dark night. 🎃

My only dream now is to hopefully see you somehow combine all of the drawings for the wheel of the year into one picture.

This looks amazing, and the meaning behind your series is really well looked into and it's really interesting how you created such a beautiful art piece and talked about the historical meaning of halloween

Brilliant artwork, as usual :)
In Hungary, we don't have Halloween at all, although All Hallows Eve have been an important day in folklore, mostly for the same reason: The gates of the otherworld open up and the spirits come. But this custom never lasted or had influence on or culture as the Irish and Scottish feast did, probably becsause the influence of Christianity was too big. So now we don't celebrate Halloween at all (of course the young do the American dressing up thing, but it's kinda like a subculture), instead people lit candles and go to church to pray for their dead. If you go to any cementery in this time of the year, all the graves are covered in candles and flowers, which is a beautiful sight.

I like that you differentiated between the Irish Samhain and the Scottish/English Halloween, as it gets confused quite a bit as the same thing, but Halloween is a much more modern thing, originating from Samhain with traditions like costumes and masks, treats, feasts and bonfires and such.

I do like that you have a very ancient symbol from Irish mythology which is the Crow/Raven, that's a really nice touch whether intentional or not, it's a very important animal in ancient Ireland. The mood and atmosphere of your work is something that is really beautiful and haunting at the same time, if you know what I mean? Anyway, love this series!
