(Music: Sowulo - Samhain)

Blessed Samhain 🎃💀🍂 My Wheel of the Year series is finally finished!

Samhain is one of the main holidays of the Wheel of the Year, which is celebrated at the end of October. It marks the end of the harvest, while also being a beginning of winter or the "dark half" of the year. It is also a celebration of veneration of deceased ancestors. During Samhain, the spirits of the dead come to visit their living relatives - people leave the doors open for them and kindle guiding lights on the windows and in front of the houses, also prepare special food. Samhain is a dark time, a time when the earth ceases to belong to man, spirits and magic beings become masters of it.

It is also worth mentioning that modern Halloween is a much later tradition, related to the Christian period (about the 8th century), the name itself is a Scottish abbreviation for English All-Hallows-Eve. The holiday was originally from Irish culture and became widely known only by the 19th century, thanks to the mass commercial culture of the USA and Canada. The main ideological difference of Halloween is that under the influence of Christianity, people stopped honoring the dead and no longer sought a meeting with the supernatural, conversely tried to guard themselves against it. Sídhe and other magical creatures turned into evil demons and spirits that can harm the living. The guiding lights were replaced by turnip lantern (later pumpkins) with ominous faces to scare away evil spirits and drive them from the house on this dark night. 🎃

Beautiful art. I really appreciate you explaining more about Samhain and revealing the origins behind modern day halloween. As a pagan, halloween with all the costumes and creepy stuff felt off to me but I couldn't put my finger on why, now I have my reason.
