Elizabeth, like most of the other afflicted girls, was detached from her parents and family of birth. She went to Salem to live with her great-aunt Rachel Hubbard Griggs and her husband, the town physician Dr. William Griggs who diagnosed the original girls as being under the affliction of an "Evil Hand". As a physician Dr. Griggs and his wife were viewed as a family of social standing. But Elizabeth was known as a servant to the household and not as an adopted daughter.
The reasons behind the start of the accusations are somewhat unclear. There are many theories of why the young girls accused people of witchcraft ranging from the hysteria to the social and economic set up of the village of the time.
Teenage outcry, desperate cry for attention that cost people their lives. The same as it always is with angsty little teenagers, even in 1692. "focus the communities' concern on their difficulties" it really had nothing to do with actual witchcraft like in Babylon, Greece, Egypt & Rome where they did practice ritual sacrifice to the gods and goddesses, like Pan who had his cult followers tear apart female Echo for refusing his sexual advances, and spread her body parts around. I see the girl and pan when I see the goatman I like this drawing though!

Real goats have really super straight/rough hair (well, the common goat at least), but considering this one is slightly humanoid and fictive, we can imagine anything! And yeah, even female goat have that special goat smell. In fact, for long, I hated goat cheese because it strongly reminded me of it.
Why so serious /o/
What humans perceive as real is only the beginning of the larger reality.
