Seasons by IRCSS Seasons by IRCSS
I always thought samarra bowl was a master piece. Putting all the meanings behind it aside, the art it self is fascinating. it always make me wonder what type of person had this much knowledge 7 thousands years ago to create such a great art. I always wanted to see how it goes in a rotation so I made this one and created and animation out of it.
To summarise it's a calender (Samarra bowl). There are 12 fishes in total (12 months, Dah!), 8 of them are going on a circle and 4 of them are swimming toward the centre; four phoenix are catching the fishes (change of the seasons) and there is a -swastika in the center, which is an ancient Sanskrit symbol (I have no idea what swastika was to Sumerians though^^!!).
____________________________________________
Edit: The Swastika in the centre has nothing to do with Nazism.
I hope you like it.... ^^

I know it's not to do with Nazism but, I think you should of put a filter on it, because I don't people will care what you say and just take it the wrong way...

Your point is interesting, however tell me for what reason am I putting the filter?! Sexual, violence or ... to be honest my opinion on the matter is this: the truth about Swastika is that it is one amazing symbol from 10 thousands years ago. One of the reasons I made this work is to show to people - which to my surprise do not know such obvious fact - that Swastika is a symbol of creation, time and dynamism. Now, are you asking me to put a filter on this truth for those who choose not to see it ?! what is the point of making in it in the first place ^^

I'm just saying you should, because some people might not read your comment, and just jump to conclusions.

Maybe it's best to just know what people might think and don't care about rough comments of this theme because apparently they don't think before writing. and they don't care so you schouldn't either.

By the way I fully understand redman's point. I as being german would not even dare to put a swastika anywhere. Although I like the symbol and the meaning here in germany it's even forbidden to use it due to the meaning it had during the 3. reich.

I saw your edit, as I recall, the swastika originally was a symbol for peace in, Sanskrit maybe? So when I saw this I thought, Oh, someone who actually know something about the history of the symbol, cool.
Anyway its a very nice piece, I adore the fishes.

thanks ^^ the problem with the animation is that it is simply to big, so the only way to watch it rotate smoothly is using the actual photo shop file (other programs make it slow :C). But I do have a small version of it as my DA avatar^^ thanks for the link by the way

I really hope you don't get any crap for the swastika, people fail to realize alot that things didn't always have the meaning they do now, I believe it was an Indian symbol for peace, though correct me if I'm wrong. Overall this is a very lovely piece and you did a great job on it.

Oh, I have already read that; anyway thanks for your concern ^^ It is true that Swastika is symbol of sun in India but this Swastika is the one that was used in middle east Sumer, I have no idea what does that meanXD.

I just read, that the swastika was even used 2500 b. C. in the area of Sumer. They didn`t write what meaning it had. I keep lookin for it.

I have been looking for a while now. Base on this scene I would probably say Swastika meant Galaxy's rotation, just personal opinion. First time I saw the Samarra's Swastika in Berlin museum I thought, Swastika looks like galaxy [link] .
I think no one knows for sure. But movements or forces that move this universe or maybe even destiny may be the meaning.

I found something. In a Lexicon about Religion and Stuff. They said, it was used since ancient Times as a symbol for the dynamic Nature of the Cosmos. I guess, the Galaxy`s Rotation and the Forces behind the Moving of the Universe is a Part of that. Further it has been used as a Lucky Charm, stood for Health, Luck, Blessing and dynamic Life. Way before the Nazis took it for their purposes.

Awesome work! I'm actually not sure if that's a swastika in the center; the swastika, from what I've heard, was actually a symbol that was made from another symbol, the mandala. It's always sad when good symbols are used for bad :(

Yes the fact that Swastika was used as a symbol for racism is really sad. I have never heard about Swastika coming from Mandala (mind sharing the source?, it got interesting I wish to read more about it :D ^^). As far as I already know Mandala is generally a form of circle that represent cosmos and contains spiritual and ritual matter and is a sacred symbol, however in old days it was form of a circle with four gates. If you look at the general definition of Mandala -now days- since Swastika can represent cosmos stuff, you may be able to be say one has been inspired from the other. However the patterns I used are from Sumer civilization, not Buddhist (Mandala is from Buddhist; however it is true that Swastika was also found in India the first time). So it may be possible, but it is not really likely!! who knows ^^

The source was a few people who were doing a historical research project. Not the most credible thing, but I figured it had credence due to them both being from India, and the fact that there was a really old Tiebetan book with a mandala that had the swastika inside [link]
There's also a representation of the Mandala as a equidistant cross, where the spokes go diagonally outwards from the posts, which looks a lot like the swastika, representing the four gates without the circle.
Also, proof that Nazis didn't invent the Swastika [link]
