i think sometimes we find meaning in disbelieving.

we take our gods & break them—we let our hands fall
to our sides & take bigger strides to cover more ground.
we step in the leaves just to hear them crunch.
the bushes burn every autumn,
but we haven't heard god's voice in them for a while.
maybe we just haven't been listening.

our superstitions are hereditary—you avoid the cracks
in the sidewalk, because you hope that, one day,
your child will, too.
you do this until you are old enough to realize
that you don't have to avoid the fissures in the concrete
to keep your mother safe.
somehow, she's fine regardless of whether or not
your toes touch the edge of where the sidewalk ends
& the next segment begins.

you broke a mirror when you were ten,
but the bad luck should've worn off by now.
there are days you wonder if it's supposed to last seventy years
as opposed to seven.
there are days you decide that fables don't get to decide your fate,
& that you are more important than a few shards of glass.

we are simultaneously dust in the wind
& the stars in the universe.
our hands are always empty,
even when someone else is holding them.
if we still knew how to pray,
maybe we wouldn't be so lonely,
but the truth is that we don't even know what we're looking for
or how to find it.

i think sometimes we get lost in the struggle to find ourselves.
though i am fairly religious, this isn't really a poem about religion. it's more a poem about humanity. the fall of the seasons, the fall of man, the fall of time.

Both beautifully written and relatable, and such a coincidence that I've recently been dabbling in very much the same subject.  Congrats a on the DD!

Personally I really like the superstitious factor about this, the things we believe as kids. And it certainly rings on a relatable level about religion, no matter who or what you follow. This honestly makes me pause to think, its very well written and I greatly enjoy it! It reminds me of when I get lost in thought while walking or when laying down yo try and sleep. Again, very well written.

this comment is so thoughtful, & i appreciate that immensely. it makes me so happy to hear that it was thought-provoking for you, because that's why i love writing—it helps to bridge the gaps between ideas. i'm also super glad knowing you found it generally relatable; i was a little worried about alienating people due to some of the religious language. your words are important to me, & thank you so much for sharing them! <3

Well, I think when you generally talk about human nature as a whole, that's something a lot of religion touches on. You've got so many views on it and similarities that it can be relatable in even a small way, you know? But aaa hey it's no problem! :3c

You are right. It's not about religion. It's about our little beliefs that go nowhere when we could be looking at what we should. I really like this. It shows how shallow humans can be.
