i think sometimes we find meaning in disbelieving.

we take our gods & break them—we let our hands fall
to our sides & take bigger strides to cover more ground.
we step in the leaves just to hear them crunch.
the bushes burn every autumn,
but we haven't heard god's voice in them for a while.
maybe we just haven't been listening.

our superstitions are hereditary—you avoid the cracks
in the sidewalk, because you hope that, one day,
your child will, too.
you do this until you are old enough to realize
that you don't have to avoid the fissures in the concrete
to keep your mother safe.
somehow, she's fine regardless of whether or not
your toes touch the edge of where the sidewalk ends
& the next segment begins.

you broke a mirror when you were ten,
but the bad luck should've worn off by now.
there are days you wonder if it's supposed to last seventy years
as opposed to seven.
there are days you decide that fables don't get to decide your fate,
& that you are more important than a few shards of glass.

we are simultaneously dust in the wind
& the stars in the universe.
our hands are always empty,
even when someone else is holding them.
if we still knew how to pray,
maybe we wouldn't be so lonely,
but the truth is that we don't even know what we're looking for
or how to find it.

i think sometimes we get lost in the struggle to find ourselves.
though i am fairly religious, this isn't really a poem about religion. it's more a poem about humanity. the fall of the seasons, the fall of man, the fall of time.

You are right. It's not about religion. It's about our little beliefs that go nowhere when we could be looking at what we should. I really like this. It shows how shallow humans can be.

something i've always enjoyed about your comments is that you usually add your own perception of the piece. it shows me another way to look at my own work. it's always very interesting.

Humanity can be found both within people and in their words and actions.
