I simply love koi. I always have. They are just fish - then again, they are not, of course!
The Wikipedia knows this about them:Koi (鯉?, English , Japanese: [koꜜi])
or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉?, [niɕi̥kiꜜɡo.i], literally "brocaded carp")
, are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp
) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds
or water gardens
Yes, they are beautiful to look at and thus, decorative and VERY MUCH SO. Some of them are expensive. But for me and for many others these animals are more precious because of their contemplative nature. I could spend hours sitting by the pond watching these multi-coloured fish gently float about. To me, they have something spiritual. I, therefore, perceive them as water spirits having good influence on us and one of the many gifts of nature, done by intelligent design.
Ever since they have come into existence, koi have been the subject of fishy business, but far more that of adoration. They have been drawn, painted and tattoed, photographed, sung about and characterized in poems. In short: they have been hailed in all forms of art. And it is not going to end any time soon!
There are many magnificent depictions of all kinds of them. So, I did what I had long wanted to do: a little compilation of my favourite ones here on DeviantArt. Check these guys out! I thank all those artists whose works are listed below (and the one above!) and all those who are not mentioned for their beautiful work. Carry On All Of You!
