---------------------------------------

Can you see this old man
Showing what the war has made him?
His eyes are still flashing like the medarls that he wears!
Think of what he saw then -
The fire and the death so close and grim.
He has done his best so that we all could live our way!

I went to the page in the link..

What an extraordinary individual. Helpfull at the forge and fields in summer, a skater in winter. And eager to be in his nation's navy. And when the motherland needed him he rose to the occation and as far as I could understand never faltered for a second. Wounded near Leningrad, almost fataly, then as soon as he had healed, to fight in the defense of Moscow itself. I understood he fought for the remainder of the war again being wounded in the final weeks of fighting in eastern-Germany and was in hospital when victory was announced.

As a Norwegian I can only thank the Russians for what they did. Had Russia not stood up to the invasion, had it not battled for victory and sacrificed so much for final victory the war might have ended very differently. It is only due to Russian sacrifice I do not speak German today. I do not think the British or American could have bested Germany. It took the entire strength of Russia. The change in politics after the war shows how ungratefull Allies can be. Russia, in her victory, was wronged.

My own family lost to men during the second world war. Though they died long before I was born in a time I did not see my grandmother has told me of them. I think I understand sacrifice. Russia's sacrifice was many times greater. The bravery, the strength and the determination of its soldiers is a story of greater courage than the world had ever seen, and perhaps will ever see again. I hope the world will not know such another war.

Thank you Russia, for your strength, for your honor and for your duty. I will not forget.
