Finally! After nearly a month, it's finished!!!
This is my entry for
's OC crossover contest.
MY very first Contest! - entries[UPDATE] EXTENDED DEADLINE: August 15!
The entries so far:
I've decided to host my first contest ever!!! I'm really excited and a bit nervous about this, but I've been planning to do it for a long time, so here it goes.
The task is:
DRAW MY OC WITH YOURS! Do you have a character that would like to travel with Yngvar, paint with Aidan, fight with Hakon, drink with Helgi, party with Rannveig, wrestle with Lars, recite poetry with Merwyn, or simply explore the world in my stories and choose one of them as guide? Or would they be arch-enemies and fi
I chose to put OCs from three of my stories into 10th century, an era I didn't know much about, but it was a lot of fun researching! Especially the food- the characters are eating traditional norse dishes of lamb, smoked salmon, oysters, flatbreads, honeycake, eggs along with herbs and roasted vegetables.
The characters at this feast are as follows: (Centre)
's OC, Yngvar, who's such an enigmatic and troubled character that I had to feature him!
The carvings on the chair behind him are the viking's version of a compass because of Yngvar's love of travelling. In front of him is a drinking horn with the symbol of a raven, to represent his beliefs and devotion to Odin, the scroll represents his interest in philosophy (probably stolen from a monastery somewhere!) The bowl containing the roast lamb in front of him is painted with flames to highlight his 'fire and fury' reputation and the bowl containing the flatbreads to his read has an ancient 10th century symbol of justice, as he is a law-giver and judge.
The tapestry behind him is embroidered with Yggdrasil, the tree of life, another emblem of his religion and it was a wedding gift from his wife, who sits on his left.
She is my OC Elysia from my fantasy story, 'Roar of Doves', who was given in marriage to Yngvar by her two violently abusive brothers, who hoped that Elysia would be their spy. Elysia, however, saw the marriage as freedom and an opportunity to get revenge. In her arms is her and Yngvar's first born son, Einar (sorry for taking the liberty of naming him!) Elysia is surrounded by sea shells, and a dish of salmon and oysters with the pearls still in to symbolise her heritage, as a daughter of the Mer people and her love of the ocean. Her hair is decorated with flowers called 'polygala vulgaris' which are also known as 'Freyja's hair' (goddess of fertility, due to Elysia's childbearing abilities) but it is also linked to the virgin Mary, combining the old religion with a new one. Her cup is carved with a swan, her family's emblem and a pestel and mortar beside her represents her herbal healing abilities- and her knowledge of poisons...
Next to Elysia sits
's OC, Aidan, who I have a feeling would get on well with Elysia, as they are both educated and well read, and the jug between them decorated with waves, shows that they have crossed the seas from island nations. Next to Aidan is a map, to indicate his love of travelling, the quill represents his past in the monastery, illustrating manuscripts, as does the pot of paint beside it.
Aidan's cup is decorated with a cross, to symbolise his Christian upbringing.
The dish of herrings in front of him carved with the sea hints at his longing to see more of the world.
Behind Yngvar, about to bend and whisper in his ear, is my favourite OC villain, Hadrian, from my story 'The Hat Trick Detective', who is Yngvar's trusted Seer. Although, who knows if they can ever truly trust Hadrian? (Yngvar might have met his match in cunning and ruthlessness when it comes to Hadrian!) Hadrian doesn't get any symbolic objects on the feast table, sorry folks, I like to keep his personality and past as mysterious as possible
Sitting in front of Hadrian is another of my Roar of Doves OCs (and my oldest OC ever), Partene, shield-maiden and former lover of Yngvar- she lost her left eye when they were play fighting as children, she doesn't blame him, she knows it was an accident, but her family have always resented him for it. (And to make matters more complicated, she is Elysia's cousin!) Her shield is painted with a phoenix, her personal emblem after escaping from torture and slavery. In front of her is a cup with the runic symbol of love, with the wine spilled to show the blood she has spilled as a warrior. Also in front of her is a dish of three quinces to show she is one of triplet sisters. Also in front of her is a bowl of apples and blackberries (autumnal fruits as she was born in autumn) with swords carved onto it to show her prowess with weapons. She also seems to be keeping a beady eye on Robin.
The last character, on the furthest right, is my OC from my latest story (a collab project with
) 'LockTurn'. This is Robin, who is Yngvar's thral, but also rather light-fingered. He has a habit of stealing things. The nordic keys in front of him depict his skill as a lockpick and the large ring in front of him is worn by thrals to show their status. The gold coins show his magpie love of all shiny things and the door symbol on the mead jug show his uncanny escapology abilities.
I did mean to include more characters, including some from my story 'When Seraphin Fall' but I ran out of time!
for this contest, it's been fun to work on.
