Stormlight - Chasmfiend by Inkthinker Stormlight - Chasmfiend by Inkthinker
One of Shallan's latest pages from Brandon Sanderson's Words of Radiance, book 2 of The Stormlight Archive from Tor Books. It was my distinct pleasure to illustrate 8 new pages of Shallan's drawings in the world of Roshar.

The Chasmfiend was another opportunity that I worked hard not to totally wreck... this is one of the iconic Big Damn Monsters of the series so far (we're still waiting a while to see Thunderclasts), and it's so vividly described in the scenes where it appears, while actually not being described in much detail. This is par for Sanderson.

Brandon described the basic idea to me as "a cross between a dragon and a crawfish"... take from that what you like. I had some guidelines for things like the number of legs, and I admit I could have done a lot more with "a mouthful of mandibles", though I like what I did with the articulated throat sphincter, with it's toothy ring. I try to think about how the feeding works with a creature that has to gobble down huge chunks of broken shelled creatures (like wild chulls, which I believe is their primary staple), and design accordingly.  The four legs in the front are made for smashing, the many legs in the back for maneuverability and support in tight rocky spaces, the sharp mandibular limbs up front for picking up chunks of meat and putting them in the mouth, the toothy throat for reaching forward and pulling said chunks into gullet.

The four voices in the cry come from the main throat, a pair of smaller orifices to either side, and... the nose holes, I guess? Maybe it has two throats down inside the sphincter...

Chasmfiends and Shallan's pages are ©Brandon Sanderson and Dragonsteel Enterprises. Drawn in Photoshop CS 5.1 on the Cintiq 21UX. Feel free to ask any questions you have, and I'll tell you what I can. :D

I am in love with your art, found the stromlight shardplate and immediately started watching and browsing through. I run 5e games and this stuff is amazing would love to chat on and off about ideas. I'm enjoying the Stormlight Chronicles as well glad to see art based on/from it.

I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere in the book, but I wonder if you know more about chasmfiend coloration? I took a guess at it, but I'd love to know if there was anything more specific in the official lore, aside from the fact that their blood is violet.

Again, this is a lovely illustration, not only in the amount of detail but also how true to the purported media it looks. These things truly exemplify the beauty and danger of big predators.
