Mistborn Adventure Game by Inkthinker Mistborn Adventure Game by Inkthinker
The cover illustration to the Mistborn Adventure Game, due out later this year and available for pre-order now from Crafty Games..

The idea here was to set up a conflict with the two major icons of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series; one of the titular Mistborn themselves, battling a spike-eyed Steel Inquisitor. The titled, inverted angle was chosen to emphasize the way these characters fly around... more or less by flinging themselves through the sky through sheer force. The blue lines point to sources of metal that they can push away from or pull towards, one of the many powers seen in the series.

I also tried capturing a couple other elements inherent to the world of Scadrial. The mists, the volcanoes that vomit ash into a red sky, the cities standing against barren wastelands, all iconic elements of the series. I tried adding some ash fall to the scene, but it muddied it up and didn't add much, so that was pulled.

If you haven't read the novels, I highly recommend them. Brandon writes unique, action-packed fantasy that's not quite like anything else on the shelves. If you're already a fan, I think you'll dig the Adventure Game... even if you're not a player, it's a repository of information about the world of the series, and includes an all-new Kelsier story by Brandon.

Illustrated in PS CS2 on a Cintiq 21. This one was tricky, and I wouldn't have pulled off the lighting without the help of my inestimable Fates partner Kevin Delucia. He's the tops.

Anyone who's read the series knows that Pushing coins at an Inquisitor is a bad idea. That particular Mistborn is sooo screwed.

:D

I found this browsing for "mistborn" on DeviantArt, and thought it was the first one I've seen that really captures what the mistborn do. So congratulations!

I LOVE that this is the cover of the rulebook because it lets me so perfectly illustrate how this world is to new players.
"See the guy with spikes through his head? You hope you'll never see one of these. The other guy? Well... hope you are one of them, but not in this guy's position."
Wonderful job as always. Can't believe I hadn't commented before now

Frig this is beyond amazing.  Is it Kelsier fighting the Inquisitor?

Not Kelsier per se, but a similar sort of character. I actually feel bad for the guy, 'cause throwing coins at an Inquisitor is probably not going to work out well for him. :D

Kelsier!

Just finished reading Mistborn trilogy few days ago, and god, it was definately best ending for a book trilogy I have ever read! Now reading alloy of law, though the rarity of allomancy in AOL feels kinda... odd...

+ fav!!!

Not Kelsier per se, but close enough as makes little difference. :D

I thought I'd miss Allomancy a lot more, but the many Twinborn combos makes for lots of variety, and the addition of technology like guns and trains throws a tasty new flavor into it, I like it more than I expected. I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

Rarity feels odd because I thought a lot more allomancers survived because mists pretty much snapped everyone potential... Plus harmony/sazed pretty much revived feruchemy, since he was last one, but in AOL there seems to be many feruchemists/twinborns, so why not allomancy as well? Also it feels weird there are no mistborn, harmony/sazed made spook mistborn afterall... maybe he made allomancy less hereditary?

BTW, I am now half-way through alloy of law, be careful and try not to spoil AOL to me :P Also, have you by chance read brandonīs stormlight archive - way of kings? if not, I highly recommend, such fantastic book, the ending really left me wanting to read stormlight part 2 right away... too bad itīs coming out late 2013, good thing brandon has planned for 9 books of stormlight archive!

The mists snapped a lot of people, but full Mistborn were always rare. Most of those who snapped would just be Mistings of one sort or another, and over time (and cross-breeding with the Terris) you get Twinborn... allomancy and feruchemy in one person. But even so, it's still a fractional percentage of the population, and not ever power has as obvious a usage as Steel or Iron. Atium Mistings, for instance, probably still don't know that they are such (as atium is so rare).

This is just incredible work. That Mistborn in this picture is about how I pictured Kelsier to look, I know that's not meant to be him, but that's pretty much who I'll think of every time I picture Kelsier.

I love the perspective of them fighting over Luthadel with the mist, red sun rising (or setting), with the ashmount in the background. What a fantastic world. Very unique and unlike anything I've ever read in any other fantasy series.

I wasn't sure why you said it was an Inquisitor... then I fullsized it. Holy crap, I thought those were glasses. And I didn't know that there was a Mistborn RPG coming out. Wonderful, something ELSE to add to my burgeoning wishlist.

In summary: that picture is absolutely awesome and is now in my favourites. At least, one of my favourites lists...

PS: I came here from looking up who drew the last story in Skullkickers. Serendipitous. And I'm not just saying that because I love that word. :+devwatch:

Fortuitous!

Yeah, one of the things I love about the basic design of the Inquisitor is their eye-spikes, and the way they kinda look like lenses from one angle, and horns from another, and then you realize it's a bloody great sharpened steel chunk passing through his skull. It's a damn good design, and one of the first that really nailed the series for me visually.

Fortuitous is a good word too.

When I was reading the books, for some reason I never thought the eye-spikes came out the back of the head. I knew they went through the eyes into the brain, but I didn't notice that they came out the other side. That is terribly creepy (which is probably an added bonus).

Oh, and one thing I forgot to ask: did you draw it as it is, or did you draw it with the city at the bottom?

The "bottom" kinda changed depending on what I was working on at any given time. I rotated it frequently while working on it, but this orientation (with the city on the top) was always intended to be the "correct" one, because it leaves sufficient dead space in the composition for the title. It also makes the heroic (sympathetic) character right-side up which makes him easier to identify, and overall it creates a sense of disorientation that goes with the idea of flinging yourself through the air the way that Mistborn do.

But when displayed without any tags, you can hang it any which way and it's still "right". And that was part of the idea as well.

Nice slightly dizzying perspective, and good job on those crepuscular rays and the lighting (and colours) in general. Dig that volcano, and I'm a fan of shiny blue force lines.

Grey-green patch in the cityscape, left of top center, bugs me though, draws my eye away from the action; cityscape in general seems pretty unfinished. Gonna be a title or such up there, I'm guessing?

What?! *sputter*... your FACE is crepuscular!!

:D

I owe a great deal to my partner at Fates, Kevin Delucia, for making those rays work ("crepuscular"? Really? well, TIL). A lot of the lighting came through when he did a pass over my base tones and shadows, which gave me the boost I needed to take it a little further and finish the job. Without him, this would have been a much muddier mess.

The grey-green mist really should have been more grey-blue, but the mixing took it there and when I tried to bring it back, it didn't tie in as well. You're right in that the whole upper bit is covered by title, which is why it's composed with that much useless space (though the city and mist are somewhat characters too, they're definitely low-focus elements).

:D

And TIL what TIL means. Damn intarwebspeak, endlessly propagating.

Learned that term sometime back researching meteorology for my still-in-the-works comics, and it stuck. Now it pops up in my head everytime I see the phenomenon, especially as in Oregon we often have mixed-cloud conditions that are perfect for crepuscular rays, especially in the evening.

Yay for obstreperous erudition!

And yay for fellow artists; the primary reason for the deterioration in my skill was a lack of contact with anything but 'normals' for the last few. Well, that, and not drawing enough.... gonna catch up with you someday though, damnit.

Wow...I absolutely adore the angle of the entire painting. Tilting the background to Kelsier's (I assume that's him?) pov is amazing! Flipped my screen around to see it in the "normal" orientation to figure things out. Super cool art as usual! :)

Not Kelsier (no scars), but more of a generic mistborn PC-type. But if it evokes Kelsier, no harm done.

Awesome work as always Inkthinker. The only critique I have is that the mistborns (? sorry haven't read this series though I'm definitely interested now ;) ) left arm looks a little wonky. Great work otherwise.

The more I look at this illustration, the more I like it. :) You just managed to pack so much drama and motion into the scene - everything from the upside-down angle to the scenery to the coinshot lines. I think my favourite detail is how the light's shining through the guy's mistcloak. Fantastic job, and I can't wait to play the game and see more of your work!
