Alloy of Law - Elendel Daily Original by Inkthinker Alloy of Law - Elendel Daily Original by Inkthinker
The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson's newest Mistborn novel, is out NOW!! Find it on the shelves, order it from your favorite book source, look for it anywhere Tor books are sold.

I'm so psyched. Full view or download to check it out in detail!

:D

This is my first officially sanctioned, canon Mistborn work, following on the heels of my work for Sanderson's The Way of Kings (first book in "The Stormlight Chronicles"), and my work on Crafty Games new RPG The Mistborn Adventure Game (out later this month).

In The Alloy of Law, Brandon and I worked together with his assistant Peter Ahlstrom and graphic designer Isaac Stewart to create a mock broadsheet, a front page from a newspaper in a world evolved from the more traditional (not really) fantasy roots of the original Mistborn trilogy.

In keeping with his philosophies on illustration in novels, Brandon wanted this work to represent a visual peek into a couple different aspects of the world as well as represent an in-world artifact. What I've posted here is the final composition as I delivered it. Peter then set to work cleaning it up, setting the type more evenly, adjusting several of the fonts and generally making the final product look even more authentically perfect. You can see the final work in the pages of the novel, or hunt down the PDF hosted on Tor.com

In the 300 or so years since the events of The Hero of Ages (final book in the original trilogy) the world of Scadrial has moved up to something akin to our own in terms of technology and society, circa 1910 or so. Electricity, steam, gunpowder and the printing press have all been invented, discovered, rediscovered and refined to create a world very different from the days of The Final Empire.

Some of the articles provide alternate views on various plot points within the novel. Other bits here provide a touch of flavor to the descriptions of the text, and some bits serve no other purpose but to amuse. Brandon wrote about 95% of the text himself, I fluffed a couple bits (with his approval, and I won't tell you which ones) in order to fill the columns, and all of us came up with ideas for the advertisements and other little details. Isaac's work appears more clearly in the final product, but he was specifically responsible for coming up with the great slogan.

I studied examples of period newspapers for ideas on layout, illustration style, and the sorts of things that appeared amongst the articles of papers in those days. If anything what we created is much less dense than an American newspaper from the early 1900's (seriously, they packed those pages tight!), but I think it holds at least some of the proper flavor. I had the most fun with the Allomancer Jak illustration, the ad for the pistols, and the political cartoon. In followup posts I'll include some details on these and other bits that we put together to create this work.

The Alloy of Law and The Elendel Daily and its contents are 2011 Dragonsteel Entertainment. All illustrations were created in Manga Studio EX v.3 using a Cintiq 21UX, composed and assembled in Photoshop CS2.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have about it, and if I can I'll answer 'em!

Fun to see this. I listened to the audiobook, which actually read the broadsheet out loud, but it's great to see what it would look like in print.

I'm guessing the lightbulb ad was all you.

Nah, it was part of Brandon's bits, but the little lightbulb design in the middle of the copy was me being a smartass. :)

How did I not realize this was here? This was my favorite part of the book. Brandon must be fun to work with.

Wait. Did House Tekiel fall in The Final Empire?

Erm... I'll go with "not entirely"?

Brandon wrote that article, and it's backed by the events of the book. I honestly don't remember all the Houses from the trilogy or how they ended up, but it's reasonable to presume that even if they had a bad time in the first series, some members might have survived and thrived in the 300 years since.

I could easily be wrong, I just thought Tekiel was the first to go down when Kelsier started the house war.

Might have been. But they obviously weren't wiped out entirely, or there wouldn't be any Tekiels to launch the Breaknaught. :D

Actually, looking back, I think Hastings was the one who fell first- one of Elend's friend's House, actually.

I've read the book, not as heavy as the trilogy but still good. I love the article on ol' Ironeyes up in the upper righthand corner. I like it, and had to chuckle at it. 16 ways to prevent an Inquisitor from going anywhere he wants??? I would like to read more about them, if for no other reason but to laugh at them.

FYI I love inquisitors and their powers.

It's been long enough (and without a well-recorded history) that the very concept of the Ministry and the Inquisition has passed into the realm of academia and legend. Ironeyes is probably only known for what he was by a rare few (though Maraci might well be one of them).

True, since the remainder of Kell's crew have passed on, though I did have to lol a bit when I read that Lestibourne's accent was called High Imperial. It will be interesting to see how Sanderson's pet project turns out.

I've not yet read Alloy of Law, though I have read all the Mistborn series. This has just given me more incentive to get my hands on it.

By the way, I love how the articles contradict each other; the two opposing Carriage VS Automobile ads are nearly right next to each other. And the Feltri stuff is hilarious too.

Yeah, we had some fun with that... Brandon wrote the anti-auto ad, so I wrote the pro-auto ad. Once upon a time, newspapers thrived on that sort of competition.

It's a fun book, I highly recommend it (not just because I'm in it). A lighter read than the trilogy.

Ha. The author and illustrator toying with each other. I like it.

I'm definitely going to get my hands on that book. I adored the trilogy, so a little more is like a dessert when you're not quite full enough.

You wouldn't happen to be planning to work with Brandon again on further installments of both the Alloy of Law series and the Stormlight Archives? I really hope you are!

Yeaaaah! This makes me happy. I was at the midnight release of the book on monday night where they were handing out copies of this when you got it the book personalized by Brandon. Unfortunately, I was a poor schmuck at the very back of the line, and technically it was already paid for and signed (they all were, if you pre-ordered)... so after waiting in line with the book in hand for some time without the line moving, and... having a paper due that morning... I left. And consequently did not get a copy of this. However! Now at least I can read it! So I feel less like a failure of a fan. Heh. But it looks awesome, and now I'm really annoyed at myself for not waiting. (seriously, though... there were like... 200 very slow people in front of me... and... and paper due!)

I got one of these papers at the NYCC and chatted with Brandon about how much I loved your illustrations in The Way of Kings. Keep up the great work.

Oh, cool! Hold onto it. I never did get one. Might be somewhat collectible, someday.

There's talk of a poster-sized version at some point, if there's demand for it. I suppose I could also DL the PDF from Tor.com and print it out large, though they never got the hi-res files I gave to Dragonsteel.

No spoilers, only teasers. This was printed out in its final form, along with the first chapter and the cover on the other side, and distributed at conventions earlier this year. It contains no spoilers for the book itself.
