The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson's newest Mistborn novel, is out NOW!! Find it on the shelves, order it from your favorite book source, look for it anywhere Tor books are sold.

Check out my previous post for more on the project as a whole:

The Allomancer Jak story was a short bit that Brandon wrote as a pastiche/homage of "travelogue adventures" that appeared in real newspapers around the turn of the twentieth century. They share common seeds with classic "dime novels" and "penny dreadfuls", wildly exaggerated, semi-fictional (or entirely fictional) accounts of the adventures of real frontiersman in the American West.

My favorite parts of the story (which you can read in the broadsheet composition above, or better yet in the pages of The Alloy of Law) were the bits that clearly illustrate our man Jak is not the most reliable of narrators, and I wanted the accompanying illustration to carry over that exaggerated heroism. I had a lot of fun with this one, even if I wasn't as successful at imitating period style in the details as I wish I had been. Excessive hatchwork does not cover up (or excuse) my illustrative style tropes.

Jak himself is a bit of Teddy Roosevelt and Wild Bill Hickock bearing a mistcoat and a dueling cane (this illustration also gave me the opportunity to slip in visual representation of those elements, both of which are described in the novel). He's intentionally so far over the top that he's heading down the other side.

I also like that Miss Dramali (presumably) isn't as helpless a damsel as she looks.

:D

Entirely drawn in Manga Studio EX v.3 using a Cintiq 21UX. Full view or download to get a really good look at the details.

Are you the person that does the magazine peices of the Alloy of Law? 0-0 I'm just finishing up the bands of mourning and I was like: "man this art in the book is really good"
And then I saw this, and you are on DA! That's so cool!
Your art is amazing and I love your style! Can't wait to see more from you! :D

Were you the actual artist that was hired to do this especially for the novel?

I just finished reading through Alloy of Law, and I have to say I've been really enjoying the touch the broadsheet and its illustrations brought to the book and the world. This is one of my favourites, between the over-the-top-ness of Jak and the world elements. :D Well done.

completely underwhelming comment incoming: I like his burnstache.

A first reading of the story makes you think he's full of crap, but looking at certain parts of the book reveals that it might actually be that way. It's intriguing.

Also, love Jak's mustache.

I'd say it's probably 50/50.

Maybe 60/40.

Aaahhh mistcloak!! And a balls-out character! Love this, man! This sounds like a very humorous story, I think I'll pick it up some day.

Have you had a chance to see Peter in his Jak costume? He looks amazing, and pretty much like your picture stepped into the real world.

Is there a photo posted of his costume? I made the original mistcloak and now really want to make an Allomancer Jak costume....

It's a great one! I'm pretty dang envious of it. But he needs to get him a wicked curly wig for the full Wild Bill look that compliments the sweet chopstache.

This is true. Of course, now he doesn't even have the awesome facial hair any more. It will be interesting to see if he keeps clean shaven, or if he decides to go back to the goatee type look he had before.

Hahaha, love the look of the hero. The fact that he has his revolver in between his legs is very informative. :D

It's a perfectly normal place for a gun to fall! Absolutely no subtext intended! I am shocked, shocked I say, at the very implication.
