We handle this like Marios... by Inkmonkey-Woodis We handle this like Marios... by Inkmonkey-Woodis
Ingeniously!

I'm not entirely sure how the idea entered my head, but I remember thinking about the Mario Bros. movie that came out back in the 90's and thinking, "y'know what, it was pretty bad, but at least they got the costumes right!" But then I got to looking into it and, well... they were close, I guess. Then I got to wondering what it would look like if the "real" Mario bros. had those outfits on, and here we are. The shoes gave the most trouble, since it's actually pretty tricky to find decent reference pictures of them.

I decided to keep Luigi's moustache, since I don't think he'd look right without it. I also decided to keep the gloves, even though they don't have them in the movie, simply because I'm not sure what their hands should look like without them. I actually had the linework for this finished with Mario and Luigi and I got to talking to some people about the concept and I realized I wanted to try drawing some more characters in the film style, especially Toad. Well, actually, I wanted to do a goomba, but I was having a hell of a time thinking of how to draw the limbless goombas wearing a suit, until I remembered that Toad got turned into a goomba in the film, so that really simplified things. I decided to go with a yellow yoshi, since the one int he movie was basically a light orange.

Sure, it might be a failed movie based on a popular video game, but aside from the actors and the Goombas, they really did innovate the Bob-Omb in this movie. The boots they were wearing are called Thwomper Stompers and the Devo-Guns were technically replicas of the SNES Super Scope. It failed, but the movie was okay.

People see it as an underrated diamond. Plus, I gave that specific version of Luigi a Smash Bros. moveset different from the pseudo-clone moveset of the original Luigi.

Little factoid about the original suggestions for the cast. Two of the initial choices for Mario were Dustin Hoffman and Bill Murray, while the initial choice for Koopa was Kevin Costner. However they couldn't make it due to conflicting schedules. Hoffman was too busy with Hook, Bill was too busy with Groundhog's Day, and Kostner was too busy with Robin Hood.

Awsome^^

The liva action mario movie was ok....i mean i seen scenes of it.....but my god they screwed it up badely......

if they'd stick with the story on how it should've gone...and added daisy in with Peach........then it may have gone better.

This is a really clever idea. People have tried to reconcile the games with the films before but it rarely works. You, however, have done a great job with it. Realizing Toad was de-evolved into a Goomba was certainly a stroke of brilliance and that does resolve the problem of an armless Goomba, though remember that there's actually three types of Goomba in the movie. The "lizard-head" Goombas are based off Koopa Troopas, so you could have gone that route if you wanted, but it probably wouldn't have fit so well thematically.

You did a really good job with the boots, though I can tell where you made a few mistakes. I happen to have quite a bit of images of the boots if you want to take a look and redo them or even just compare how they differ.

Overall it's just a really cool piece. I actually help run a website devoted to the movie and we'd love to showcase this artwork on it if you're interested.

Of course! Your description seems pretty expansive and we could certainly use that, but would you prefer writing something different we could use on the site? Just let us know and we can put it up next time we update.

We've just made an update so your artwork will be going up this coming weekend. In the meantime feel free to look around and check out what we have up so far.

In recent months we've been interviewing the cast and crew of the movie so there's lots of interesting stories and photos in those sections.
