Kieran Pine leaned against the black wood fencing as he watched the Sooty Palomino stallion trot around his paddock as he explored his new home. The new stallion was assigned to Kieran as his ranch horse and possibly show horse if they got along well enough. For the time being, his task was to work with and pen cows on the sooty palomino splash stallion and move up from there since every TPR horse was exposed to cattle work through one way or another. As of currently, Kieran knew nothing about this new horse besides the fact he was broke to ride. He quickly realized everything else about this stallion was a mystery to him and would take a while for him to work out as he watched the massive stallion trot over to him and sniff his hand curiously, getting a gentle pet from Kieran before the satisfied stallion turned away and began to graze on his new lush, green pasture.
Behind Kieran, Rhys Pine, the owner of Twisted Pines Ranch walked up with all of the stallions paperwork in hand, thumbing through to ensure everything was there as he began to speak,"Here's all the papers for him, from his vet inspections to his coggins. I figured we'd give him a few days to adjust before starting him off on some of the fall calves and see how he handles." Rhys grinned as he ran a hand through his short blonde hair since Kieran had been complaining that he didn't have a main horse to work with for ranch work such as penning and working with the cattle. Kieran took the papers and thumbed through mostly health papers before he nodded at Rhys. "Thanks, do you know anything else about him that I should know before I go get a bridle and saddle and do a warm up on him? I want to see how much he knows and how he acts before I put a cow in front of him. I ain't getting bucked off because a calf crawled up underneath him." He stated, wanting to know everything before he stepped up on the stud. Rhys grinned and shook his head,"You know almost as much as I do about him. Previous owners didn't know much about him either besides he was a good ranch horse that became a pasture ornament since they didn't have the time for him. They confirmed he was saddle broke and had been ridden enough that he could go in any direction." He said simply as he took the papers back as Kieran grabbed a tie rope from the gate and stepped into the pen.
The stallion's head picked up to study Kieran walking towards him, turning towards him and standing still for him to loop the tie rope through the bottom ring of his bronc halter. The stallion started walking alongside him, head carried in line with th his topline. Kieran led them into the barn and looped the rope through the bars of the nearest stall while he disappeared into the tack room. Rhys walked in behind them, closing the stable doors behind him before putting the stallion's papers up and walking out to stand with the stallion in the aisle. Rhys patted the stud's thick neck, "Go easy on him huh?" He whispered to the stud before walking past to turn the indoor arena lights on and to get a good spot to watch from.
After slipping his saddle and bridle on, Kieran led the stud to the arena to lunge for a moment before he stepped into the saddle. The leather creaked softly as he got his seat, laying the reins on his neck to turn him to the right and trot down the fenceline. Kieran then asked him to lope, and with a smooth transition, he started a smooth, 'rocking-chair' lope as the stud loped the end of the arena.
Now it was time to really test him out.
Quickly, Kieran loped the stud in a figure eight, following a simple reining pattern he'd memorized for a past show. The stud caught on quickly and followed along, his stops and turns were great, gaits were smooth. Kieran thought to himself,'This stallion has to be a pro that dad bought somewhere and passing him off as a grade, average sale barn horse.' Finally, Kieran brought the stallion to a stop in the center of the arena and stared up at his dad in the viewing deck. "This is a pro horse isn't he? Ridden and trained from some reining horse farm somewhere, right?" Rhys laughed as he looked down from the viewing deck, leaning against the railing, "Nope, bought from a horse sale for $2,500 and was told he rides like a dream. Though if you don't watch him, he'll stop listening mid-training and do what he wants. Otherwise, he's a perfectly good horse for you to ride around the ranch on, and," he paused, "as a show mount later. If not, your sister Eden will make him her barrel horse. Your choice." He said simply as he turned and disappeared from view.
The stallion shifted underneath him, leather squeaking slightly as they stood there for a moment. Kieran sighed,"Looks like we're in for the long haul fella, we'll get a name for you soon." He said as he stepped out of the saddle, patted the stallion on the neck and led him inside to his new stall.
