Description
Race Entering: The Devil's Mile Maiden
Horse: ERS Call of the Wild
Stable: Emerald Ridge Stables
Owner:Natasha O'Reilly
Trainer: Tessa Price
Jockey: Amaris Thompson
Word Count: 501 words
Call of the Wild had lunged off the trailer the night before the race wildly, it was like something had him spooked or nervous. Tessa and Natasha could understand why the 2-year old would be so nervous due to the fact that this was his first race away from home and everything was foreign to the spirited, rebellious colt. Knowing Wild Thing, they would have to be patient and slowly introduce things to him.
Wild Thing didn't recognize his surroundings and that worried him. He didn't know what laid in the darkness beyond, but he knew that he didn't like this. On the bright side, his friend Gus, an blue merle Australian Shepherd show dog that the stable brought with all the two-year olds to keep them company and keep them at ease. "Nice and easy." Gus muttered as he walked beside the colt down the barn's alleyway, other horses were either fast asleep or wired awake with too much energy with them. Wild Thing tried to settle his nerves as Tessa walked him into his stall and hung up hay and put out water for the night. They set up his tack in the according tack stall and changed from his shipping blanket to his stable blanket since it would get colder that night. After all was said and done, they left and the barn lights switched off, sending a couple of the 2 year olds into a nervous frenzy. Wild Thing laid down in the corner of his stall and Gus laid down beside the colt for comfort and warmth. Soon after that, they were fast asleep.

The pair awoken the next morning and Wild Thing was brushed out and lunged. Gus waited nearby in case Wild Thing panicked. Amaris put on her silks and met everyone when it was time to saddle up. Wild Thing was escorted to the course by his track pony named Jewel, a Quarter Horse filly who had always been with him from training.
"Jewel, I don't think I'll do well." He confided nervously as they walked to the starting gate.
She slowly turned her head to him as they walked,"Why do you think that?" She asked in confusion
"Have you seen me? I'm a nervous wreck. I don't know this place." He said, his eyes wide with worry and confusion
"Well, the rest are nervous wrecks and they don't know this place either. But I know you can do this, I've escorted you to the gate a hundred times and I've watched you run gallantly a hundred times. Make this count and pretend you're at home. " She said optimistically as they finally reached the gate.
"Thanks Jewel. I can always count on you." He said softly then loaded into the gate.
'Make this count and pretend you're at home.' echoed in his head as he listened to his heartbeat in his ears.
"Make it count. Make it count. Make it coun-" He was interrupted by the starting bell and he took off.
