St. John's wort/Hypericum! Mostly because of its name in russian, "Зверобой, which roughly translated as "Beast slayer", and because it's believed to ward off evil spirits.

Out of pure aesthetic - bittersweet buckwheat honey and heavy incense. Reality, of course, is less pleasant. Metal, sweat (both his own and horse's), and smoke.
