Description
After 30 hours of non-stop shooting and driving, an incredible gathering in front of me: the majestic mountains of Vestrahorn on the left, the last sparks of the Northern Lights on the right, and the glimpse of the coming twilight in the center.
The previous day had started by waking up near sunrise, after sleeping inside the car (and after a 200km ride during the night). We decided to sleep at Jokulsarlon, and at 5am we were headed right off to the ice beach, under extremely cold weather. As usual, got soaked up to my knees and only had my first meal at 15:00, after driving 80km to Hofn. The weather changed in an unexpected way, so I cancelled the plan of shooting Vestrahorn in the afternoon, and headed back to Jokulsarlon, which meant another 80km trip. According to the forecast there would be a 2 hour window with clear skies during the night in Jokulsarlon, which could mean finally being able to witness the Northern Lights again. When we arrived to the Jokulsarlon lagoon, light didn't look that good but I hoped it would get better as the sun would set behing the glaciar mountains. Fortunately it did, and we were treated with an incredibly display of light and colors. Once more, extremely cold temperatures and I was the only crazy guy soaked to my thighs in freezing water, thanks to the neoprene gear. When it got dark we headed to the car to grab some sandwiches and waited a bit to see if there would be any Auroras tonight. The Aurora forecast wasn't good, with just a "2" rating in Vedur.is, even though we had clear skies, but the most beautiful natural phenomenon in the world finally made it's appearance! After spending two hours shooting it, and as it got more faint, I decided to still head back to Vestrahorn, for yet another 80km, only made possible through some cheap energy drinks filled with caffeine, available everywhere in Iceland. My companion was absolutely exhausted, so she decided to say in the car, but I was feeling like it could be a good night to shoot the Vestrahorn mountains and perhaps get some Aurora activity above it, even though my body was begging for some rest. It definitely payed off, and I got some great shots of this absolutely incredible place! Stood up well after sunrise, and then just crashed in the car. My head hurts like hell and my body aches all over, but I just can't stop doing this...
