This lil' guy is adorable!! I love the simple struture. It's cute how there's a little crystal on his tail, too. I love how you drew (painted?) this picture. The colours are very warm and befit this character. I also like the stroke visibility. I actually don't know if there's anything I could criticise about this beautiful drawing. Maybe you should add a background? For example, somewhere this type of creature would normally be found? I don't know. I'm not the best to ask about stuff like that. I like your signature. It's very creative. I take it you draw dragons a lot?

Aww! I like how cute this little creature looks! ^w^ With it's shiny eyes and how it's holding the little thingy.

Here is a list of things you can improve on:

- Honestly, I think that the thing the creature is holding by the tail is bit too small. It's hard to tell what it is. Maybe it's a ring or an earring. Why not make it comically big. It would look funny! XD

- Suggestions: Maybe give the creature adorable little arms that it can use to try to reach the ring/earring or maybe small mouth.

Overall, the creature is adorable and I like how realistic the shadow looks! Hope this helps! ^_^

Here is a :constructive:
There is no beating around the bush, that's one cute little dragon hatchling! It also seems to be already into the common dragon hobby of getting shiny items for itself, but I can gather it's even more so if he can shine himself. The wyrm sure has personality and charm thanks to great composition and expressiveness. Though, I am uncertain why is the prism he holds counted as a special characteristic...
In any case, I am amazed you were able to make a lineless drawing with a background of similar color yet still have it stand out so well! I would have went and made a more contrasting background to make the character stand out instead of complementing it, which actually works to it's favor. With a quick glance at some of your other work, you seem to be really good at that, so keep it up :D
As cute as he is, with all of his charm points, I have issues getting a feel of his skin texture. Does he have a soft skin? Scales? Is it banana flavored? It looks very soft, almost like it was molded from playdough, and looking at your other works, seems to be a part of your style. You seem pretty devoted to it, but I usually don't find dragons to be as soft as you make them out to be, even if they are at such early stages of development. It is a pretty subjective opinion, though, but I think it's something to keep in mind.
There is one other thing that bothers me, and that is his contact with the ground. With the way perspective and the shadow are set, he feels like he is slightly off the ground, almost like he is standing on top of his spikes, which is probably not the case. If he is as soft as he looks, his body would have squashed slightly and would lie on the ground more. Currently, there is very little contact between him and the ground, and with the shadow being so much wider than he is, it makes it all seem slightly off, the more you pay attention to it.
But those are minor nitpicks. It's a really nice piece and there is no way those little details can topple it's shiny glory :D

Thanks for your feedback!

I'm still trying to figure out how to convey the skin texture on these dragons...  I've always imagined this species having something like thick, human skin, probably made of micro-scales.  I'll try studying human skin for some ideas to make it appear less like plastic. ^_^;

And yes, I think you are right about the back spikes.  They are tough, but probably not hard enough to really sit on their tips like that.  They'd probably bend over and squish down.  Very good point!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a critique.  I'll try to keep an eye on your points in future works.

Hi, I found your deviation thought :iconprojectcomment: 's weekly commenting project,

Wow, he is very cute! The large sparkly eyes combined with the generally round and simple form really give it that winning, adorable vibe. The way the body is curving into a round shape helps drive home that feeling of cuteness (at least it does for me). To put is simply, you have done everything right to make this appear cute. The fact that he is holding a little crystal is also a plus. We can all connect with the feeling of holding something precious and seeing others with their precious possessions. This is another good plus for you as the artist because it is important to connect with your viewers if you want your art to be remembered among all the other hundreds of drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc. out there. You have a splendid composition here!

Your lighting is generally pretty good here. The way you've done the coloring and highlights definitely brings glossiness to mind, which is what your description says. I get the feeling that he's got a bright light on him and the shadow he casts gives me a feeling that the light source is coming from above. I do think that some of the shadows could be a bit deeper around his spines especially under the curve of the spinal cord. You've done a pretty good job of it as is, but the lines seem pretty soft and not very distinct to me. Maybe a little more darker shadow or some small contour lines might help make it pop a bit more. Similarly, the tail that is curled around the crystal's chain could use a little touch of some darker shadow or firmer line to help bring out the curve of the tail better. If you wanted to be really ambitious, you could tell your audience a bit about the dragon's flesh by making the chain appear to be partially covered by skin (if it is soft and fleshy) or use shadows and some harder lines to indicate tough scales. If you really want to make him appear luminous, you might try adding a gradient and making some of the lines softer near the top and harder near the bottom. You could also use the crystal to show reflected light if he is currently meant to be glowing with happiness. Some more yellows are the top or maybe even a small halo of reflected light depending on conditions could suggest this.

The thing that makes me a little confused is that he doesn't appear to have a mouth. With fantasy, anything is possible. He might eat without a mouth, but perhaps there are ways of suggesting that you could try. Suggestions with background or small markings with anatomy could offer your audience more clues about this. If his mouth is really small, you could try adding a half circle or something like that near the edge of the snout. Even one small, hard line with a touch of glossy highlight could suggest a little mouth.

Your art is very lovely, and all of this is just my humble opinion. Keep making wonderful art! Hope some of this is at least a little helpful.
