Lisbon’s trams are truly distinctive because they combine historic charm with clever engineering adapted to the city’s geography. Unlike most European tram systems, they run on a narrow 900 mm track gauge, which allows them to squeeze through Lisbon’s steep, winding, and often impossibly tight streets. Many of the trams in service today are Remodelado models from the 1930s and 40s, refurbished but still retaining their polished wooden interiors and brass fittings, giving passengers the feeling of stepping back in time. Their ability to climb sharp hills and navigate hairpin turns makes them not just a mode of transport but a living museum on wheels, with the iconic Tram 28 doubling as both a commuter line and one of the city’s most popular tourist experiences.
Beautiful B/W photo, so many textures and shadows with such depth
