Just a humble backyard documentary photographer.

Inayat Ali Shah Born 13th January 1958

I am an Avionics Engineer by profession and a photographer by addiction.  I reside in Islamabad, the Capital City of Pakistan.

I have had a camera in my hand since I was 7, the camera being a box brownie. I don’t ever recall ever being able to take a single photograph with it.  It wasn’t till a few years later when I had a Yashica-Mat 124G Twin Lens Reflex that I mastered the skill of being able to take a photograph.

Taking photographs as opposed to being a photographer has always been a part and it has been a slow evolution for me to go from family snaps to the street-documentary work that I do now.

I believe every photographer must find their own niche.  Not only a love for the end product but an understanding and fascination with the subject matter and these two converge for me in people.

While there are many documentary photojournalists out there that cover the spectacles of life, the wars, the carnivals, the revolutions, the concerts, the performers and the pretty people.  But somebody has to capture and portray everyday life, everyday people and everyday stories in a visually appealing manner, keeping the context true and without exaggerating or warping reality.

Above all, life for a photographer cannot be a matter of indifference”

It is with heartbreaking grief that I share the passing of my beloved wife, Fariha Ali. Despite her courageous and valiant battle against Leukemia, she ultimately succumbed to the disease and left us on 12 January 2026 at 2115 hours.

I visited Uzbekistan about 13 years ago, I was just coming out of a 15 year photography hiatus, just starting digital photography and just starting to view the world again. I finally decided to make the Accidental Uzbekistan photocollage. Uzbekistan is a landlocked jewel in the heart of Central Asia, is a country steeped in history and cultural richness. Once a vital crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, it boasts legendary cities like Samarkand and Bukhara where turquoise domes and intricate mosaics whisper tales of empires past. Through its vibrant bazaars, majestic architecture, and resilient spirit, Uzbekistan invites exploration not just of place, but of time itself. PS. I can trace my ancestry back to Bukhara.

APOLOGIES !!! Apologies to the groups that have my images , people who have favourited my work and friends and followers. I recently realised that I had over six thousand images in my galleries and I felt that was just too many images. I am now removing images from my gallery, starting with duplicates or nearly duplicates, slimming down series of shots and those with poor technical execution (out of focus, badly exposed or poorly post processed) I find it a very difficult task, but I have so far managed to cull nearly 250 images , I am aiming to bring the whole number down by 1000.
