A hannya from the noh play Aoi No Ue. The Tale Of Genji. Her former husband of high standing died. She was one of the many mistresses if a noble named Hikaru Genji. Because of her age and rank, Genji was reluctant to return her love. Seeing him with Lady Aoi and being forced to repress her feelings for him transformed her into a hannya. This was intensified when her ox cart spot was taken by Lady Aoi in the Holly hock festival when she found out she was pregnant with Genji's child. Her jealousy manifested into an ikiryo (living spirit) and terrorized Genji and Aoi. An excorcism warded away her ikiryo but Aoi died after giving birth. Rokujo was unaware of her ikiryo and when she found out it was her, she fled and lived with her daughter Murosaki who Genji later had a relationship further agonizing Rokujo.
