Magical Merlin by In-the-picture Magical Merlin by In-the-picture
Merlins are such a gorgeous falcon - definitely my favourite raptor
:aww:
The Merlin is a smallish falcon that breeds in northern North America, Europe and Asia. In North America it was once and sometimes still is colloquially called "pigeon hawk" though it is not very closely related to true hawks.

Merlin IUCN Red List Conservation status - Least Concern

This is one of my favorite hawks and one I see in our area frequently. I've never been able to capture him as he is very swift and unless you know he is in the area and as in my case, zeroed in on our pigeons...you'll miss the shot...as is my case.:( This picture is beautiful and detailed and I'm actually filled with envy...but also admiration for your capture.:) Beautiful shot!
BTW: He is locally know as the Pigeon Hawk.:)

I haven`t caught one in flight either, way too fast - of course made all the harder by fact I can`t look up as my neck doesn`t go back (result of car accident in `90) that`ll be my excuse for not catching one anywhen...
They are my favourite raptor - think I prefer name Merlin to Pigeon Hawk, sounds more romantic and arthurian.

PS Hope it doesn`t eat your pigeons then, well unless they`re the pest sort of course!

So far they haven't although we had a Goshawk catch one of the very young ones. We have Syrian cross pigeons and they are extremely swift and agile in the air. We have had some exciting moments and incredible aerial displays with unimaginable flying skill provided by these pigeons. Never have I seen a Goshawk or Merlin out-maneuver them in the air. That to me is an amazing feat.:)

So...I haven't been successful capturing a raptor in the air, but then I haven't been able to capture these pigeons in flight either.

I have a distant picture of a Raven chasing a Goshawk last week that I am going to submit...but the birds are only in silhouette.:(

Birds are the best! I have a rainbow Lorikeet. Its about 13 years old now, had him since I was a kid. Its got the cheekiest personality but its so friendly towards anyone because I used to take it for push bike rides up to the shopping mall so it got used to people!
So I can totally relate to how much you love them, some people may not see how each bird can be so different in personality.
