Description
The Mark-1 Gunbox was the first attempt by a country with a somewhat scatter shot industrial development to make use of vehicles for military purposes. It's underlying doctrine is summarized below...
Dan the General: Hey Larry!
Larry the General: What Dan?
Dan the General: You know what would be really cool?
Larry the General: *sigh* What Dan would be really cool?
Dan the General: If we took an internal combustion engine or two and we put a metal box and bunch of guns on it!
Larry the General: You know what, that's not half bad!
And so they did that. They took two 45 KW tractor engines and stuck them side by side in a big armored box, to which they affixed every cannon they could cram onto the side in a variety of sponsons, pintle mounts and even a turret as well as seven 7mm machine guns. Due to the amount of space taken up by shells and bullets, each member of a Gunbox's thirteen man crew was no taller than 150cm and sat on crates of ammunition. It had a top speed of 4 km per hour. The generals were rather fond of gunboxes and made as many of the damn things as they could and due to lobbying they managed to nearly bankrupt their country making over 2,900 of these vehicles over a six year period, their production. This was hailed as a triumph of the nation's industry. Their production also the mechanization of agriculture by a decade by slowing the production of agricultural tractors to a standstill. On the battlefield, they were feared and admired, when they did not get bogged down in mud, capsize, render their crew unconscious or have one of their engines fail, resulting in the vehicle turning around in circles endlessly. A fair number of them were sold to foreign powers, in some cases as test vehicles to compare their own experiments in armored fighting vehicles against and after that, as target practice.
