Description
The Mutant is a symbol of irreversible change, and it’s appearance is often a sign that something about you or your way of life is going to change so significantly that it is impossible to return to your old self or way of life. The change brought about by the Mutant is not always good or bad, but rather represents such a dramatic change that things won’t be the same.
People resist (and even fear) change because they want to hang on to their past and the way things are, but the Mutant teaches us to let go of where we come from and embrace the new. How we interpret the change brought upon us by the Mutant is largely up to us. The Super Heroes of legend wouldn’t have become the heroes that they are today if they didn’t choose to use of their suddenly-acquired powers to help others.
The Mutant doesn’t tell us the scope of this change – it could be a major event that changes everything about us, or it could be relatively minor. For instance, it could be as simple as the improvement of one’s own abilities (skills attained or knowledge acquired can be difficult to lose once gained), or even something along the lines of becoming more mature. Even changes to our environment – such as leaving your old home in order to live in a new city – can also be brought about by the Mutant.

This is my entry for the Seventh Sanctum SF Tarot Card Contest [link][link] [/link], using the generator result of: “The Mutant”
I had a fun time both in drawing this picture as well as developing it’s Tarot Card meaning. I actually began working on it’s meaning before I began drawing it, since I wanted the imagery to reflect the symbolism.
I also tried to make the card appear like it was a part of a futuristic deck of Tarot cards, so I decided to go with more digital art techniques (instead of traditional art techniques). This meant using more gradients (instead of using the brush tool), adding geometric textures, pixel art, and making things look like they were glowing. The future always has things that are glowing – that’s how you know it’s the future.
