Okami - We Who Cannot See by Ill-wovenElm Okami - We Who Cannot See by Ill-wovenElm
Amaterasu in white wolf form, as the world sees her.

Someone in one of my art classes this term was using ink on glossy paper to create a very unusual and interesting effect. This is, vaguely, an attempt to recreate that in digital format, combined with the Okami style.

Really, I'm just trying to force myself to be more loose. Only half worked in that regard, but I did manage to make something pretty in only a couple of hours, which is good enough for me. :3

Edit: Moving this to the Okami Contest just for the hell of it. I might fix it up a bit (finally), but not until after I finish the new submission I'm working on for it...

Larger size available on request, I suppose...

You should do more of Okami like this! You're really good at drawing her without her disk :)
Mouseychu Featured By Owner Oct 30, 2009
This is amazing, I think you've captured the Okami style perfectly here <3
This has inspired me to do some 'nonbeliever' Ammy fanart.

Can you help me?
how you did the "brush trace"? I'm trying to do a wolf ink picture where i need this kind of trace. x.x
Ill-wovenElm Featured By Owner Sep 14, 2009
Well, what I did was paint a big black line, then erase smaller lines from that, then and smaller black over that, until it looked like it had been made using a brush. It's mostly just going over the line multiple times until it looks like you want it to.

I hope that helps at least some. ^^;

Oh, that a lot of job, but it's okay! I'll try ^^
Thank u!

Wow. D: That is a -beautiful piece of art.- I love the color gradient from the sun to the rest of the piece, the richness of the colors and the starkness of the contrast of that beautiful white wolf against the crimson background. Especially with Ammy, the color is so crisp and bright; she reminds me of snow. <3

What I didn't notice on my first look was that the tree she's leaning against is the same ink she's been trailing, a wonderful little detail in my opinion. XD The difference in the texture is startling, contrasting sharply enough that they don't seem to be connected at first.

The brushstrokes, the colors, the detail...this is really a gorgeous piece. Lovely! <3

...Did you make that icon? I wanna do that dance. XD
yamiraichuuhime Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2008   Traditional Artist
I only wish I'd made it. XD I just found it online. I've been using it for years. Glad you like it, though! Most of my friends say that staring at it for too long will let it steal your soul. ...or that it dances to their music. Either or. XD

Okami in her non-god form...
That's something no one has drawn yet except you. Very creative. ^^

Good luck! :D

this is very beautiful. i'm really not trying to criticyze, but i think there is room for improvement on the fur. i know that you are following the style of okami, but ammy kind of looks like a polar bear here.

Awhm. This is actually the first fanart I've seen of Ammy as the white wolf, and it's gorgeous. I love the paint trail from her tail, very creative.
Awesome. =D

It's lovely, really. <3

I'm in love with that style, and I have to know: did you use Photoshop for this? Or some other program?

The only problem I have with it (and this is really picky) is the positioning of Ammy. Her pose seems a little awkward, though I'm not sure why. Maybe with the pose she's in, her legs would be posed differently? Or maybe they'd be a tad bigger - I'm not really sure.

Though, considering how I draw Ammy, I can't really comment -__-;
Ill-wovenElm Featured By Owner May 25, 2007
Photoshop, with a tablet. And I think I mostly messed up her torso with my lack of knowledge of animal anatomy, plus not drawing her body as a whole - the legs were tacked on much later, since she was originally going to be sitting on a roof. :(
DarkAeonity Featured By Owner Jun 9, 2007
Ah, okay then. I wonder if that means I can do that too...? *thinks*

*shrugs* It doesn't look that bad., y'know. The torso's actually fine. Ammy tends to have a strangely large torso with a smaller backend. Deep chested, basically. So the legs aren't too far off. And you did a good job with the anatomy - especially if you're lacking in animal anatomy knowledge.

Once again - It's lovely :)

*Laughs* Thankyou kindly. Can't wait for finals to be over, really, 'cause I'm working on another wolf pic right now, and can't wait to go home so I can have our dog for an actual model. ^^;

I just went though my set of exams for the semester, so I have to say: Good luck in your finals. :D

Well, about making it look a BIT better, People who believe in amaterasu can see her crimson marks, but only very faintly, so you could add them in.

I have no authority to critize...only adore, and favorite. :heart: :heart: I adore to no end the contrast Ammy and the sun provide in the picture. And also the way you colored her fur looks alot like the way they did it in the game which, of course, makes her fur look so full and fluffy regardless of the bold lines. :giggle:

spongerat Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2007
Really stellar, I also had a hard time thinking of things that I would change, but I do have one. The color of the sun does not quite mess with the japanese content or the other colors well. I do like the gradientit emits, though, so its a tough call.
Ill-wovenElm Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2007
Ah! I'll mess with that a bit, then. Thanks. :3

I was pondering adding some swirls to the sun, too, to more emulate the sun graphic they use...
Kisharu Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2007
I love the idea and the effect; it's really gorgeous. Not to mention the colors go together very well, making a very nice composition :3 The only thing I could suggest is that she only has three toes, but then again...I think she only has three toes in her design *looks* nope, she's got four. Sorry, little things like that get to me sometimes ^^; Like on pokemon and other child video games, most of the creatures have three toes!...they're supposed to have four ;-; B-but don't get me wrong, I adore this piece!!! --:+fav: And I admire anyone who can do such lovely digital art in all truths :nod: It's hard for me to do ^^; then again...I don't have a tablet TT^TT *sulks*
