Nobody Expects the Colonial Inquisition by ILJackson Nobody Expects the Colonial Inquisition by ILJackson
One way the Colonies of the Line ensure that their holdings fight hard against the the corrupting influences from the Sea of Dead Stars is the Inquisition Fleet. If a colony is deemed corrupted, the fleet is sent to blockade the planet, and, if necessary, purge it.
Thus they inspire diligence and obedience by making the cure more frightening than the disease.

Excerpt from the Journal of Zan Holindai, Nix Lord Magus:

"Fleet? No. More like an entire Armada. An armada led by fanatics and zealots. Truly... A terrifying thought to most sane sentient species. Honestly, though, I would not have expected this fanatical faction of humanity to have such power at their disposal. I doubt ANYONE honestly believes that. Truly.

the fact that this space armada is state-of-the-art is not what makes it awe-inspiring to behold. Nor is it the idea that this armada is being controlled by fanatics and zealots. No... What is truly terrifying, what really continues to plague my mind... Is that, behind all of that, working their dark machinations, is an Agent of Chaos...

... The Inquisitors, themselves, cannot be corrupted, nor swayed from their crusade. So... That only means that someone other than an Inquisitor must be behind it all. Someone above them...

A former player from another campaign were talking about you on the phone the other day. He was like you, he took the big picture view in a Riftspace campaign I ran for about two years. he said he actually got to the point where he wanted to avoid combat and preferred unraveling the layers and mysteries of the game and liked trying to plan 15 steps ahead at a time. He was playing an Honored Pilot, very different from Zan...but your "big picture" styles were similar, which is gratifying from the aspect of a GM. I'd hate to put in all these layers if nobody delved into them.

Interesting. Interesting in the aspects that you say, as well as the knowledge that y'all were talking about me, in such a positive light. Makes me smile.

On those topics though, you know Zan was my first magic user... Ever. So, being a lord magus, a creature who will live for thousands of years... He had to take the long view and the big picture perspective. However, he does enjoy piting his magicks against other beings. It's one of his "guilty pleasures".

I like how you guys are playing the game so far. It makes it fun for me when people get invested. Sometimes you have to work on it, sometimes it takes care of itself. You have to admit, making Toni The Key was a great way to draw her more into what was going on...
Once your players care about what happens and what's coming, they start acting a bit more like people would in real life. Often, player behavior in RPGs is very unrealistic. Now, you guys have taken on a life of your own and I just have to throw a nibblet or two your way and you run with it.

Oh, agreed, whole-heartedly. Toni's backstory was, for lack of a better term, unremarkable and insanely low-key. You took that and turned her into something crucial and important. Not just for the crew, but for billions upon billions of people. A complete 180.

Also, I'll agree with the assessment of player behavior involving RPGs. Often times that's what attracts potential players. The un-realism. The old analogy of a Juicer running towards his enemies plugging himself in the head with a .44 caliber pistol, as it was, just because he's got hundreds of SDC to blow for no reason.

In either case though, it's the vested interest of the character, more so than the, often times, ridiculous whims of the player, that should move them to actions. Every character in the game, minus Vic sorta, has a vested interest in their own actions.

Zan - the masculinist movement within the Star Alliance.

Will - the underbelly of the Assassin's Guilds and Ninja Clans who're watching his actions.

Toni - well... She's The Key... Nuff said.

Emerald - the various Hedonis/Sensate sects of which she is a part of.

Now that we are all fully aware that our actions are now being watched but that they have far reaching ramifications... The characters care.

Plus, with the tidbits you give us, we can't ignore them. To do otherwise is just dangerous.

I don't know exactly why, but I find the simple squares of the engine thrusters very appealing.

And here Emerald has been wondering if the Inquisition is really as bad as everyone says it is after meeting Yasmine...

Actually, the crew of the Endeavor always expects the Colonial Inquisition, but not as much as they expect to meet shit the Inquisition was made for.
