Hello everyone! In November, a change was made as part of a larger ongoing revamp in how image hosting and processing is handled here on DeviantArt. However, as part of the process, some complications arose that have taken longer to address than previously hoped, and as such we wanted to provide some transparency on the matter.

First and foremost, thank you for your bug reports and comments with regard to these recent changes! The feedback that we've received has helped us nail down some of the primary issues that have needed attention. To clarify also, as it came up in a number of comments: the image processing changes are unrelated to DeviantArt Eclipse. As the timing of both overlapped, we fully understand that it might have seemed that the issues created by the image processing changes were connected to Eclipse, but we do want to reassure you that they are separate projects.

While some specific fixes are still in the works at this particular moment in time, here are a list of some of the things that have been addressed/are in the process of being fixed:
  • When clicking the "Download" button on a deviation with downloads enabled and saving the image from there, the title of the deviation and the deviant's username were not included in the file name. (Fixed as of January 4th)
  • There are quality issues when displaying some JPG files on site currently.
    • On this topic, some deviants have noted that some PNG files are being converted to JPG files. This has been a regular procedure on DeviantArt in the past to keep page load times low in situations where multiple images are displayed at dimensions smaller than the original uploaded image. Fixing the quality issues with displaying JPG files will hopefully mitigate these concerns.
  • Some particularly large files aren't being resized properly.
  • Links to images stored in Sta.sh stop working after a certain amount of time, even when the image is still stored in a deviant's Sta.sh.
We're continuing to work on the aforementioned issues and we'll do our best to keep you informed as things happen, so stay tuned for further updates. Thank you for your patience, and your continued support. Stay devious!

not being able to host images on deviantart/stash and use the image address elsewhere is very frustrating.
it used to be a simple image url, but now it's long with a bunch of stuff and I still haven't found a way to make them work.
is this a bug or something you've done on purpose? would really like it fixed.

Copying image address no longer works and leads to a broken image, no idea what's causing it to break but hoping it can get fixed for using on sites that you can't upload images on

Images cant be traced to original location. So you cant use <img src> to display new stash images any longer. They stay up for a few hours then the link is corrupt and they no longer display.

Hi there! I'm afraid I can't replicate the problem you're running into, png files are still uploadable as far as I can tell. Are you running into a particular error message when trying to upload a png file?

Basically the image will say it’s been uploaded but won’t show and just shows the title of the deciantariom in the top left hand corner. Tons of other people are dealing with this issue currently, not just me. Some people are saying it’s large png files having this issue.

Can you let me know what size png you're trying to upload (height/width/size in MB), and link me to a few other people who are running into this as well? I'm trying to figure out the source and whether or not it's related to the things mentioned in this journal, to see what needs to be done to get this up and working, and the extra info will help with that. Thank you!

It actually seems that the issue has been resolved today! I tried from Microsoft edge from my pc and safari on my iPhone. Both didn't work at the time but now I am having no issues, I will check in with others to see if it's fixed on their end now as well!

Well, I remember clearly that when you were increasing to the max the size of the image, you were able to save the file as it was uploaded by the author (= the file in .png for example) without having to hit the deviantart "download" button. Which was very convenient.
And additionally, jpgs quality was already.. very questionable before, but now it's a real disaster :/

I think it is like that now. I have been saving the gallery of ilTassista today and most of the images were PNGS and my optimizator of pngs worked with them. Is jus for the resized images. If you always click "original size" you won't have problems, I think

Who came up with a genius idea to save someone's image after we clicked the download button? I remember the pop-up window used to show up, but now when I click the download button he saves someone's picture on my computer. I'm using Opera and the pop-up window used to show up when I click the download button until this stupid update didn't come out. I don't like this move.

Eclipse

First, mandatory listening:

So, as most of you probably knew before I did, DeviantArt Eclipse, the new version of DA's site layout is out for beta testers now, and frankly, I'm thrilled. The site's needed a visual update for a long time, and an early form of this was on the docket even back when I still worked here. Having said that, I think they fixed a lot of the things the original mocks needed work on, and did a lot that went well beyond any expectation that I'd previously had for a site revamp.

Not least of which being this new journal editor, hello? These editing tools are fantastic. This is basically everything we'd originally wanted Stash Writer to be as users, but cleaner and more efficient. Granted, I'm still trying them out for the first time as I'm typing this so bear with me, but keyboard shortcuts all work exactly the way I'd expect them to, and highlighting text prompts the exact menu I'd expect to see in Google Docs (and I don't have to click an Add Media button to use it!), so thus far, I'm stoked.

I'm getting a little off topic, though.

First impression: I hate dark backgrounds. I've always hated dark backgrounds, and my biggest fear when the rebrand originally happened was that the whole site would go dark. Bring on the light background. It's easy on the eyes, the navigation is simple and easy to figure out without being terribly far from what the average user would be used to, and most importantly (to me), I don't have to strain my eyes trying to read anything here.

Side note, it took several tries to get that image where I wanted it. So, maybe not as instantly intuitive as I would've liked. I wish I could drag the image around once I have it in the document also, but I digress. These are small issues in the grand scheme of things and are easy enough for me to adjust to.

The new deviation page is stellar for images. I love not having the page adjust (sometimes twice) whenever I want to see an artwork at its original size. It's clean, it's fairly consistent as far as I can tell, puts very solid priority on the artwork, and makes for an overall great viewing experience. On the literature side of things, I think the deviation page could use a little work, most notably that the title takes up a good chunk of page space, but actually reading the text itself is super easy and, although I haven't tried it out yet, I suspect formatting literature's going to be easier than it's ever been here on DA.

They're working on literature thumbnails and having preview text, so no need to comment on that as of yet. Also, DDs are in the subnav bar on the home page now, and although they were always in the left column of the home page before, having the menu option appear right under the main nav should hopefully help with visibility.

It's so easy adding art into Journals now. Two clicks. Love that. I'm really digging how easy it is to share things in Journals now, it's very fluid and simple and low-hassle. I do wish I could select which image showed up in the header with a click, rather than it automatically being the image that first shows up in the journal, but I suppose that's a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things.

So, that leaves one major concern, which is something that goes beyond a visual update of any site and is a problem every site faces, but especially one with the background DA has: where do we go for community engagement? As someone who has admittedly fallen out of the community just by proxy of not having the time to be around, I don't know that I'd know how to navigate the site in a way that would help me find like-minded people, outside of searching for a topic and hoping for the best among the art results. I'm really only mentioning this because I feel like it's something other people will bring up, but I'm gonna be real here: I feel that way about the state of the current public-facing version of DA, too. It's an issue that's gotta be tackled on its own and can't be fixed with a visual overhaul.

But at least once we get to that part of the conversation, we'll be able to have it on a sleek and user-friendly version of the site.

I'm excited for this. Can't wait to see it roll out to everyone.

Eclipse Change Log: January 9, 2019

Happy New Year, and welcome to 2019, deviants! We hope everyone had a relaxing and fun holiday, and we can’t wait to dive into this year’s updates and fixes!

Before we get into this week’s change log, we’d like to inform you of some major upcoming Eclipse-related updates, which will be highlighted and discussed in separate journals outside of the regular change logs. Some of these major updates include:

Custom boxes / customizationFeedback & WatchLiteratureAdditional Profile personalization

These are fairly significant updates to DeviantArt Eclipse that we look forward to communicating and sharing with you all in the upcoming weeks, so keep your eyes open! Without further delay, here are this week’s changes and bug fixes:

Eclipse Change Log: January 30, 2019In this week's change log, we have a small handful of bug fixes and improvements as we continue with the larger features that are in development. Stay tuned for more, and keep the bug reports and feature requests coming!Change LogThe "add to favorites" panel on deviation pages now allows you to select multiple collections. (Suggested by @wynbird, @battlefairies, and many others)On the Daily Deviations page, literature now includes preview text. Various other smaller bug fixes and stability improvementsThe new "add to favorites" panel lets you easily add a deviation to many Collections. (Artwork: hidden view by @umbatman)Literature thumbs — including on the Daily Deviations page — now include preview text.Using the New Bio EditorTry the new Eclipse bio editor! When adding a bio to your Eclipse profile, we'll start you off with your bio from the old site. Please keep in mind that some elements, such as thumbnails, were not able to be transitioned to the new editor, however you can still add them to your bio. We recommend trying the new image and gallery features to share your favorite artwork in your bio. Also note that due to migration issues, bios of deviants who are not on Eclipse are static, meaning if they update them on the old site, the changes will not be reflected on Eclipse until that deviant switches to Eclipse and edits their bio using the new editor. Eclipse Change Log: December 12, 2018

This week, nearly the whole DeviantArt team — encompassing staff members from Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, Kiev, and Vancouver, to name a few — has come together at our HQ in Hollywood to focus on Eclipse and plan what’s in store for 2019.

As a reminder, we’re continuing to work on the bigger community feedback concerns — including customization and improvements to Feedback — and we hope to share more soon.

Since the holidays are coming up, and many people on our team are traveling or taking time off, we won’t have a change log to share for a short while. But we want to let you all know that we are continuing to review and analyze your feedback, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you early next year!

Change Log

Literature descriptions are back! (Popular request!)After replying to a comment in Feedback, the notification is now automatically removed. (Popular request!)Comment link pages now have "parent" and "top" buttons, and are now centered for easy readability. (Popular request!)Scraps are back! You can now mention a deviant just by typing (rather than selecting them from the list). The Gift dropdown on profile now tells you when you've already given them a llama or they are full of cake. Removed minimum character count in Status Updates and Journals, allowing deviants to share a post that simply includes a deviation, gallery, or video.

What's Next for Eclipse: WatchAs @danlev mentioned in a previous change log, we'll be covering some areas of DeviantArt Eclipse with more in-depth journals. Last week, we kicked off with a journal dedicated to updates that are coming soon to Feedback! This week, one of the essential areas of DeviantArt is Watch. It’s where we go to discover what’s new amongst who we follow, and get inspired by things we’re familiar with and love. We wanted to make sure your Watch experience is just as exciting as your Browse experience, but also as efficient as your Feedback experience. We’ve decided to make the Watch page dedicated solely to Watch – so you’ll no longer see the tabs for “Watch”, “Feedback”, and “Notes”. As soon as you’re on Watch, it’ll be just that – everyone and everything you watch! Here are some related updates we’ll be introducing to you all soon:New NavigationNo more multi-clicks or dropdowns to get to the content you want to see. You’ll now be able to filter your Watch through a sticky header – so whether you want to view Deviations, Group Deviations, Status Updates, Commissions, etc., just one click and you’re there! (Cameo appearances from: @ekud, @cochalita, @aenea-jones, @samanthadoodles, @cassielink, @tanyasimpson, & @mrs-durden!)Multi-Remove & Multi-SaveA popular request from Beta Testers! We’ve improved the experience to remove or save areas you watch by having a sticky remove/save option that follows as you scroll through Deviations, Journals, Polls, etc. (Additional cameo appearances from: @rhads, @sheharzad-arshad, & @kristynakvapilova!)Deviants deserve a flawless browsing experience so they can access the content they love with absolute ease. We hope these changes will help achieve that. These upcoming updates will be announced in @danlev weekly change logs as soon as they are live. More from DeviantArt

What's Next for Eclipse: FeedbackLate last year, we released the beta version of DeviantArt Eclipse – a redesign that puts more emphasis on artists and their art. It’s one of our biggest, most ambitious updates to date, which is why we’ve chosen to open it to Beta Testers as early as we did. Not only do we need Beta Testers’ help locating and squashing those pesky bugs, we want to gain deviants’ feedback, thoughts, and opinions on the current Eclipse experience and what we should include in the future. We’re very proud and excited with the level of collaboration we’ve been able to achieve with the DeviantArt community, and we hope to continue this as we further develop Eclipse. The Beta version of Eclipse has brought many changes (see them here), with even more in store, including ways to customize and personalize Profiles! We Hear You!Since the Beta launch of Eclipse late last year, we’ve received a lot of feedback regarding just that: Feedback. You might have called it a few other names in the past: Feedback, Message Center, Notifications, etc. Let’s establish what Feedback is: it’s comments and replies made on your art, any mentions of you or your art, and correspondence with other deviants and groups. We processed and analyzed your thoughts and opinions on Feedback, and how cumbersome it had become to interact with friends on Eclipse. With that, we’re excited to show you some major updates in the works.Changes We’re Making Based on Your FeedbackNew NavigationYou can now easily access Feedback by clicking on the bell icon next to your avatar, with all the different areas visible for you to filter through. Just a simple click and you can filter to view only your comments or only your mentions.One-Click RemoveA popular request from several Beta Testers! With one, easy click of a mouse you can tidy up Feedback to your exact liking. Multi-Remove & Multi-SaveEnjoy a more seamless process of removing multiple notifications in an efficient manner, or saving some of your favorite Feedback moments.Let Us Know!We understand how important being involved and embedded in the DeviantArt community is, and we hope the updated Feedback helps you connect and communicate more easily. These upcoming updates will be announced in @danlev's weekly change logs as soon as they are live. Share with us in the comments what you look forward to using in Feedback, as well as anything else you’d like to see improved!Got something else on your mind? Eclipse Change Log: November 28, 2018

Thank you for your continued feedback and bug reports on DeviantArt Eclipse!

Our team has been working on customization and personalization options and we have brainstorming sessions planned where we’ll be further discussing how you’ll be able to customize and personalize your profile in Eclipse. We’ve been gathering and sorting your feedback, including the top ways you use Custom Box, and we’ll be reviewing it in these brainstorm sessions. We will have more to share soon!

In the meantime, we’re still working on other customization features already in the design stages, including editing your bio and custom cropping of your profile header art. We’ve seen some creative ways people are featuring single deviations on their profile (for example, see @ellysiumn and @katy-l-wood’s profiles), and we’re working on the ability to more-easily feature a single deviation on your profile.

Here’s this week’s change log!

Change Log

Header art quality on profiles has improved. If your header art is blurry, ensure that the original deviation is available as high resolution under “Display Options.” (Thanks, @queen-kitty, @titusweiss, @kaleidechse, @battlefairies, @yuukon, and several others who brought this up!)Fixed issues where typing in a URL in a Journals, comment, or Status Update would display the URL twice.Removed minimum character limit from Status Updates, allowing you to post a Status Update that just includes a deviation, gallery, video, or emoticon. You can now open and close Commissions from the individual Commission page.A “back to top” button added to galleries and browse pages.Badge pages are back! After posting a comment, the browser now scrolls to your comment. The toggle for Mature Content now reads “Show Mature Content” instead of “Mature Content” to prevent confusion. (Thanks for the tip, @rotane and @uszatyarbuz!)Fixed issue where tooltips would not display when hovering over the Add Deviation/Gallery/Video/Emoticon buttons on Comments, Journals, or Status Updates.Fixed issue where the “Send Note” button on profiles would open a new note with no recipient. (Thanks for spotting, @nominee84 and @mrs-durden!)Fixed issue where literature Daily Deviations displayed title twice. (Good catch, @3wyl!)The header image for Commissions is now centered.Updated the design of the “I’m open for commissions” button to make it look more prominent and clickable.Fixed issue where bolded text in comments would appear as a different color but not bold. After clearing out your notifications, the “no notifications here right now” message would be misaligned. (Thanks, @starlighthawk, @ikazon, and @sweetchimera!)Various other smaller bug fixes and changes.

Eclipse Change Log: February 20, 2019In this week's change log, we've updated literature pages — a popular request from the community — as well as a handful of bug fixes and improvements. Stay tuned for more, and keep the bug reports and feature requests coming!Improved Literature Deviation Page DesignAnother popular request from the community was to improve the design of literature deviation pages and put the actual writing front and center. Thanks to @battlefairies, @jcoolarts, @thebigeasy66, @queen-kitty, and the many others who shared their feedback on literature!Try it out: Memories, Light the Corners of our Minds by @srsmithChange LogAbility to submit a Journal to a Group has been added! Click the “New Journal” button on a Group’s Journal tab to submit directly to that Group. You can now edit older literature deviations in Eclipse. (Thanks for pointing out, @dc-26 and @littlekhajiit!)The Daily Deviation page now includes three days by default (instead of two), with a "show more" button at the bottom. While using browse or search, your previously selected sort mode will be preserved when you switch back and forth between Status Updates, Polls, and Commissions. After clicking a deviation from browse or search then clicking the back button, you'll now return to the correct position in the results rather than the beginning. When a deviant gives you Points, the notifications dropdown would display "[deviant] gave you..." without including the amount of Points given.Eclipse journals would be cut off on smaller screens on the old site.Clicking “View Log” on a Group admin notification would link to an error page.On Feedback, the timestamp on comments and replies now links to the comment’s permalink page so you can see the full context of a conversation. When italicizing, bolding, or underlining a heading, the headline would break onto multiple linesTimestamps on Feedback notifications are now clearer. (A notification from 3 months ago now displays as the actual date rather than “3m” which could also be confused as 3 minutes ago.)Daily Deviations page now includes a “Back to Top” button. The account reactivation page (restoring your account after deactivating it) has been moved to Settings rather than your profile page. This fixes an issue were deviants would need to switch back to the old site to reactivate if they deactivated while in Eclipse.
