In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Limitation Added to deviantWATCH

Due to constraints within the +Watch system, we have added a 5,000 deviant limit to the amount of deviants you can +Watch. This change only affects a very small amount of deviants, all of whom have been contacted privately regarding the matter. In the future, you will receive a notification if you attempt to watch more than 5,000 deviants.

Please note also that this only affects how many deviants you can +Watch, not how many deviants can +Watch you.

Why is there only a 5,000 watch limit? We have reached the limit it would seem.

your limiting people to how meany people they can watch?
even if this only affects less then 1% of people on DA you sod'nt limit people (unless this is just until you can fix some bug or something in witch case I sapose it makes sence)
Chilkad Featured By Owner May 21, 2013
I have a problem while creating a new journal. I just hate how it always sets my journal skin to the default one when I'm making a new journal. But now I can't even SET the skin anymore. I click "change skin" in right bottom corner but nothing happens.

Has anyone had any problems with viewing deviations lately? A lot of thumbnails are replaced by the broken file icon, even the Daily's.

Anyone else having said problem?
xxstarfallxx Featured By Owner May 20, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Me as well.
bjorkenborg Featured By Owner May 19, 2013
I've got the same problem too.
Kohaya7Koizu Featured By Owner May 18, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I agree with *Paulwe, a search bar in notes would be nice... preferably, a function wherein people can type the deviant user's username to see all notes exchanged with that person... I, and for sure, other people too... frequently loses notes, because they get pushed off... and marking it starred does not always help...

well that's just a suggestion...not of a big deal, I guess. Is there someone in the admins who actually reads the people's suggestions?
GospodinP Featured By Owner May 18, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Please hurry up and delete my least active watches. I'm a few hundred over the limit, and DA doesn't give me the tools to do anything like "unwatch the 50 least active people from my list" myself. I'll have to go in and squint and guess a lot to make room for any new people I want to watch.

I am not objecting to the limit, but the tools to manage friends don't help me here.
akaCaitlinne Featured By Owner May 18, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
There have been some people requesting an option to edit their comments after they're sent. I don't think this is a good idea. Imagine all those (useless) bitching in the comments. That's annoying enough, but if someone can be a total idiot and just change their comment later to a politer response, nobody would be able to see what was going on.

I think we are able to live with the typos. (If you're so worried about it, spend five more seconds to reread your text!)

Someone added me to their watch list a while ago, who had over a million or so pageviews.. can't remember the exact figure but it was big. Wondering how this could be (I know there are some very awesome people who have reached this amount, but they are few), I scrolled further through his profile. He had dozens and dozens of of people thanking him for adding them to his watch list...

... pretty nifty way to attract attention to his profile...

Hi, is there a way i can hide deviations from my gallery ?

Is there a way to make one of my galleries private so only i can see it.

I don't want to share my work just yet, but i also want to keep them stored in my deviant account.

Thank you for your time :)
rileylaurent Featured By Owner May 16, 2013
If you upload a file to, no one will see it unless you submit your file as a deviation or you share the link. It's a nice option if you only want to share with friends or something.

If you want to hide a current deviation, see this link for how to put it into storage: [link] You can always bring it back, but it won't be viewable to anyone while in storage.

Thank you I'll definitely check it out :) So stash will hide it from other people ?
The-Lost-Hope Featured By Owner May 15, 2013  Student General Artist
I think it can, double check first! And not a problem I love helping people when I can. :D
helenavampire Featured By Owner May 15, 2013  Student Digital Artist
Hey :D Ok so it does work, but i'm trying to hide current deviations from my gallery without having to delete them completely. But it's no big deal, just wanted to know if that was possible.
Thanks again for your help !
The-Lost-Hope Featured By Owner May 16, 2013  Student General Artist
Oh yes there is a way! Um its called storing them I think. And no problem at all. :D Oh here's the link to some info on it FAQ #307: What is the Deviation Storage Tool, and how do I access it? Can I temporarily hide deviations?

For all the people bitching about the limitation, stop. It's impossible to keep up with that many deviations, and I will prove it with math.
[NOTE: All data here came from a random sample of five fairly active deviants, and the reading time came from an average of how long it took me to read te different written works. Same with the time it takes to view an image.]
I've found that most artists put out an average of one deviation per day, so start out with 5000.
Of all the deviations I counted, about 95% were images and the other 5% were written works.
So, 5000x(95/100)=The amount of images you'd receive: 4750
And 5000x(5/100)= The amount of written works you'd receive: 250.
On average, it took me five seconds to fully appreciate an image, so 4750x5=23750.
This is the amount of seconds it would take you to view all those images. We want hours, so we'll divide by 60 twice.
23750/60=395.833. That's minutes.
For hours, that's 395.833/60=6.597222
6.597 Hours. That's more than 80% of the average workday.
And that's just for the images.
250 of the deviations are written works, still uncounted.
During my sampling, I found that it takes me an average of 5 minutes to read an average written work, so 250x5=1250 minutes. Holy Crap. Now for hours.
1250/5= 20.833 hours.
Combining the two, 6.597+20.833= 27.43 Hours.
Ladies and gentlemen, that's 3.43 hours more than we have in a day. Unless you can somehow add 3.43 hours to a day, and still find time for sleep, there's no possible way you could get through all those watch messages before you got 5000 more. I rest my case.
TL;DR: It would take you more time than we have in a day to get through all those messages.
nopinky Featured By Owner May 15, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Whoops, I made a typo. @_@ It should be 1250/60, not 1250/5. The result is still the same, though.
rileylaurent Featured By Owner May 16, 2013
I like that you tried to calculate it, haha. I will say it depends on the type of people you watch, though. The artists I watch post an average of maybe 3-5 deviations per month, which dramatically decreases the total time taken to consume the content. If you add the fact that many people don't read all the journals (ex. stuff like convention schedules aren't of any interest to me), I can see how people could conceivably keep up with 5000+ excellent artists and not want to miss any of their work.
elexti Featured By Owner May 14, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
God, I don't even know how you'd keep up with that many deviations :S

PS. Those binoculars look like the ones I use haha :)

I was wondering does this include the amount of deviants AND groups in your DevWatch?
ItsNotFilia Featured By Owner May 17, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Yep. Each group counts as one "watchee".

Mhm, or even to edit them. I hate when I make little spelling mistakes, and then I can't really fix them. T-T
sceptrekind Featured By Owner May 14, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
You know what we need? An option to delete a comment we've made/edit a comment we've made.
I accidentally confused one person for another because they have the same icon, and I reallllly wanna get rid of the comment.. I also send in comments with typos without realizing it and then I have to send another comment in reply to mine just to try and fix the mistake. So maybe you guys could try to add a feature where we can delete/edit a comment?
