In our continuous effort to improve the DeviantArt experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Bringing You Closer to the Community

As DeviantArt grows, we strive to find more ways to connect you with the things and people that matter to you most. After months of designing, testing, and engaging in community conversations around the shape of things to come, we're proud to announce a series of features that will bring you closer to the community. These new features include:
  • New Site Navigation: With better organization and improved structure, our new navigation creates a more streamlined site experience. Features like Today, Undiscovered, and What's Hot have been given more prominence, while the More menu is now easily accessible with its simplified, new look.
  • Today Page: The Today page is the place to start your day. It's the pulse of the DeviantArt community — the new human and dynamically powered newspaper for the community that reflects the stories inside of DeviantArt as they pertain to art, fandom, pop culture, and world culture.
  • Watch Feed & Status Updates: The Watch Feed creates a sequential stream of activity from your watchlist, including deviations, Journals, Collections, Status Updates, and more. Status Updates let people share quick updates about what they’re working on or what inspires them. Find an awesome deviation? Share it in your Status Update.
  • Improved Collections: You can now watch Collections, delivering you a custom stream of daily inspiration to your Watch Feed. Collections are now visible on deviation pages and tag pages, giving curators more exposure. Become a curator and create Collections of artwork around topics or genres you love.
    • Tags: Tags create landing pages around topics — making it easier to discover related artwork, bringing together artists and art appreciators, and forming communities around common interests. As DeviantArt grows and creates new ways to discover great content, we believe tags will play an important role in better surfacing artwork.

Change Log

  • When navigating away from the Watch Feed, the page would not retain where one left off browsing. Fixed by inazar
  • Uploading an avatar would not always work, when uploading smaller images in the "Complete Your Profile" walkthrough. Fixed by trezoid
  • In Sta.sh Writer, pasting a Sta.sh URL into a document would not work as intended. Fixed by trezoid
  • For Chrome users, tabs on pages of Groups you admin were misaligned. Fixed by baclap
  • On the Submit page, the Add Media toolbar would sometimes overlap the submit button, if opened and closed repeatedly. Fixed by baclap
  • When resizing a Journal thumbnail in Sta.sh Writer, the handles for resizing the thumb would not be in their correct location. Fixed by trezoid
  • When including thumbnails in comments, unnecessary extra space would be added on all sides. Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.
  • Responses to the Discuss topic varied, though in general deviants were positive about taking part in art challenges of most kinds.
  • Generally deviants value daily challenges for how they push you to create quickly without being intimidating as far as quality level goes. By the same token, deviants like weekly and monthly challenges because the challenges push them to improve at their craft while creating.
  • As part of the release of the new Today page, art challenges are now present on the DeviantArt homepage! You can get started by checking out the Horrorscope Challenges. What timeframe would you prefer to see, when taking part in these challenges and challenges in the future?
  • For deviants who responded saying that they don't take part in art challenges, the main reason given was lack of time to participate.

Discuss!

Watch Feed

When browsing your Watch Feed, what types of content do you like to see most? What content do you see too much of? What other things would you like to see, when scrolling?

What was the whole point of the status updates? I honestly don't think they were necessary due to the fact that we have comments, notes, journals, forums etc.

Hello!
I think I'd suggest an idea for deviantArt. Why don't you guys consider making an Android app for mobile users? Sometimes opening deviantArt via mobile through browser is kinda...frustrating. An Android application makes enjoying art in dA more comfortable and enjoyable. And more: we can update status (as the feature is available), add an art to our favorites and publish art from mobile!

We can even upload our ideas, sketches and more to sta.sh from the mobile app! Doesn't it sound like, a good idea or something?

Anyway, the site updates are great, so you guys are. Keep up the good work! ~

Why does not the browse page stay defult anymore when I open deviantart? What happened? Now it starts at today!

Used to do the same for me, then spotted if you typed out the full URL for browse, it would land on browse.

So either change your bookmark to this, or type this into the address line each time: www.deviantart.com/browse/all

Should fix it.

Agreed...that's not how it used to work.  I'm assuming it's an attempt to land people on the Today page to give it higher hit numbers... as if people prefer the new layout.

I greatly dislike the vast majority of the new features, but not quite enough to make me angry enough to leave.  If I were a PAID subscriber it might be different.  If I were PAYING to receive such horrible customer service, then I might just demand my money back and leave.

strange. Now it seems to put browse as defult once I log in or press the DA logo again.

I believe that is the way it is supposed to work.  It remembers where left it if you hit the logo, or log in, but if you type in the url, you have have to type in the /browse/all or it will hit Today by default.

It's just like I said after the poll about the Smartphone OS. I voted None with that for a reason beyond honesty.

They are turning this place into another Youtube. I hate the default "today" homepage and their side-scroll lists. WHEN WILL SITE ADMINISTRATORS EVER LISTEN TO THEIR USERS!?! People actually use things called "computers" and it is greatly inconvenient to have to try to get through the side-scrolling lists.

And before anyone says anything like "Oh, it's still at the top, just click here-"

No. We did not require that before and it should not be a requirement now. If there is an option to set default homepage of Deviantart to avoid the side-scrolling setup, then I want to put that thing in. Otherwise, it's a crap move.

Besides, Deviantart, tell me this: How is a site that is meant to feature art and literature ever meant to be optimized for a 4.5" screen? Hmm? There's all kinds of small details one misses within artwork when it is resized to such a small point. And good luck ever trying to read stories or anything of any real length on such a screen. No no no no no.

Smartphone/tablet optimization-a fancy term for "screw computer users"-is a horrible idea that should not have been implemented. The smaller portables should have to yield to computer setups, not the other way around.

I hate the new look. It takes me twice as long and wastes more of my limited internet recourses since you removed " my gallery " in the menu. Before I could click between "my profile" and "my gallery" in one single click...now I am wasting time and internet download. Bad idea and design fault changing this.

The colour and size of the stick menu is horrible and wastes too much valuable real-estate place and makes the page look TOO busy and really ugly.

I am sorry that I am not writing to the right place, but I have a small problem, but rather a bug. I contacted the technical support, but it was not able to help me. So get down to business. following your updates on my page appeared widget "activity", he appeared on their own. I did not add it. there appeared my drawings that I add. the problem is that after this widget appeared, drawings duplicated in the "more from daianaairisu". somebody had a similar problem? if so, how you solved it? I do not want to delete the drawings and then re-add all. suddenly they will be duplicated again? Please, help meWaaaah!

Why not to provide the screenshots then?
In fact that widget on your deviations pages glitches in a whole. Some deviations have nine images and a half of them are dublicating, some have only three or six. It's some script problem, and I doubt that it depends on you to solve it (since I can see it too). They should fix it on site, so make the screenshots, provide the direct URL's, write the detailed description and apply to Help Desk one more time (if they truly removed the previous request).

I sent a screenshot and not one, even with a description of each. after that, they were silent. I asked them what they decide it or not, they responded by removing the request. And this is true.

I understand, but it seems that another way to solve your problem just doesn't exist.
You can try the following:
 - gather replies from your watchers testifying that they also see that problem, and send the report again (including as detailed information as it possible) - Help Desk reacts faster when the request is mass;
 - if they will not respond or remove it again, try to send a note to one of the developers (trezoid or kemayo, for example). Or apply to community managers (Heidi, danlev or wreckling, for example) - maybe they could suggest something else or somehow influence the situation.

Honestly not crazy on this new page layout update... Maybe it will take me a bit of time to get used to it but I'm not sure if it makes it in any way ''easier'' for me, means I got to learn where all the navigation is again. It was just sprung on me this update lol just loaded up the page and.. whoa, what? whats happened here?! Not liking the idea of my folders from my faves being thrown up on my page.. but I can just take those off.

I see too much group submissions, polls, journals, etc - basically stuff I already get messages for.
I'd like to see stuff that I don't get notified for - mainly status updates.

In the watch feed I personally like seeing journal, deviations, polls, and status updates. I don't enjoy seeing other people's collections because many times their art interests don't align with mine, so I actually turn that feed off. I think what I'd really really like to see on the watch feed is the ability to mark each item as read when I'm done with it and then it would remove itself from the feed and my message center so I don't have to go to my message center when I'm done and remove it.

Another thing, I'd be more likely to use the activity feed on my profile if I had the ability to control how many items it displays at a time. Personally I don't like more than 1-3 items showing at once. Otherwise it gets super crowded and messy on my profile. I'd also like to be able to control what it displays. I don't like having it posting my collections every time I fave something. Then it shoves down the stuff I do WANT people to see.

Other than that, I do like the changes! I just would like to see a few tweaks here and there. Thanks for listening! :D

Not keen on the new layout.
Plus things being added to profile page by default was a pain.

Let us add if we want.

There are so many problems with this new lay out I don't even know where to begin....Like the annoying hashtages making it very frustrating uploading art!!...I don't feel like writing 10 hashtages for every single thing i upload...It use to be memorized!!and it worked so much better that way!

and another problem that i really don't get is that you hid the daily deviations..I use to love looking at them each day..but now that you hid them I totally forget about them....and i'm sure a tun of other people forget about them too..Guess it's a bad time to win a daily deviation if no one bothers to look at it XD

I'll admit, I haven't been on DA in a little while, so these new changes were definately a surprise. I've only been meandering around here for about an hour now, so I doubt I've found all of the new things that have been added. Right off the bat, however,

My thoughts about the new layout :

I like :
1 - The fact that the main page has a layout of all of these different sections. It makes it easy to find.

2 - A more simple menu bar up top.

3 - I like that when I'm meandering down through the daily deviation's newly layouted page, I can see the artist's name and the person who suggested its comment.

4 -  A little late, I know, but OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THE OPTION TO GO BACK AND EDIT OUR COMMENTS! FINALLY!!! \^o^/

I don't like -
1 - The fact that once I choose a tab link from the deviantart.com page, it keeps me stuck there. It doesn't give me an option to go back or to any specific "main" page (not like it use to) unless I actually click 'today'. I can see how this is useful for some, but for me, I don't like it. If I click on 'deviantart.com' I wanna go back to the main page. Not just what tab I'm currently clicked into.

2 - HOLY CRAP THE THUMBNAIL / PREVIEWS ARE BIG on the Daily Deviations (thank you for not messing with the thumbnails for the What's Hot? section. THANK YOU). On the one hand, it's nice. Easier to see them. On the other hand, I have no desire to click on them to actually see the full sized pictures. (I'm sitting at a 19 inch monitor and 1024 x 768 resolution, so these thumbnails are flipping big.)
I see only 2 per line. (I'd personally prefer a layout of preview pictures / thumbnails like what's on the Today page for the What's Hot or even the Daily Deviations section. Now THOSE are thumbnails I like size-wise. That way I can see a lot without it eating up tons of isp speed and don't have to sit waiting on picture after picture after flipping big preview picture to load. And yes, I know I could just use the zoom out feature, but that's a pain in the neck, zooming out for an overall look, then needing to return to normal zoom when I want to see the actual deviation on its own page.)

3 - No options to customize how I view these pictures. It's all just stuck at size "BIG".
(Feels a bit too much like Google Chrome or IE. Not really customizable or too user friendly. I wonder if there's a firefox addon to fix this. . . )
Just like with the More Like This thumbnails on the deviantion pages. Only way we could do anything about it was to install an addon to 'fix' it.

4 - The menu. I've always hated buttons and extra space wasting links. (call me a minimalist if you want, when it comes to my browser. Just the menu and address bar on the same line at the top, the status bar on the bottom, and that's it. No excess junk.) Though I guess I shouldn't complain too loudly. At least the menu doesn't scroll with me. I Hate hate hate hate HATE SCROLLING menus with such a passion that it's not even funny.

* * * * * * *

Other thoughts -

Thank you for not messing with the notifications / message center.

Thanks for your hard work at keeping this place easy to navigate and easy to enjoy.

I just wish there was a way to select personalized options for my (logged in) Deviantart experience. It reminds me way too much of a quote I read about over on the Firefox help forum.
"Tech team : Here you go, public! Here is the new Firefox release!"
"Firefox Users : *5 minutes after the release* Anyone have a fix for this?"
Being flexible with options for an individual user brings in way more positive reputations and a better experience.

Really look into a multi-lingual option for this place. It may be a pain in the butt and take a bunch of time, but it'll 100% be worth it in the long run.
