Story Resume: The park ranger runs into the mares while doing their daily tasks, the stallion is gone exploring a possible threat coming from a scary sound he noticed down the hill and the mares are waiting and paying careful attention to his every move in case they have to fleed. It's the first time the ranger is able to take a good look at the mares without the stallion pushing them away inmediatly.

Weather conditions: Hot temperatures, partly cloudy. Water reserves in the valley are at 32% capacity. Humidity in the air is high, making the mornings and late afternoons extremely foggy. Visibility during those hours is reduced and we must proceed with caution.
Wildfire warning level Yellow.
Tasks completed during the day:
-Mail Check. No news.
-Supplies for the month picked up and brought back to the station.
-Repaired fusible box in the communication tower.

I saw the herd again! Can’t believe it! Why are they so close to the ranger station? They never get this close, horses are usually down in the valley. I think this one might be a new stallion in the area and the regulars aren’t letting him in, I tried to look him up in the system but nothing turns in.
And I just don’t know how can you miss a horse like that, big and muscular, leopard appaloosa, he looks completely white when the sun strikes him and then you catch a glimpse of gold from his pearly coat, he should be famous.
We have started to call him Glitter, or Glitter Man, Glit, you name it. He’s a young stallion, but I can’t tell his exact age without any previous records. I’ll have to look harder for older files once I get back.
Yes, right, the horses. I’m writing this log at 09:23, I ran into the herd during my morning patrol, mostly into the mares. It’s the first time I actually managed to get close to them… Usually Glitter makes them run away the moment we make eye contact with him. And they have a baby foal!! It must be from this spring’s crop, maybe… April or May, so three or four months old and still nursing. It’s all legs but beautiful, playful and looks healthy but the herd seems to be struggling a little bit. The nursing mare, a tall grullo roan mare that we have started calling Elle, seems to be really struggling with feeding herself while feeding her baby. She’s a bag of bones, walks around dragging her feet with her head low. I don’t know if she’s fully healthy, there might be malnutrition, there might be… parasites, piroplasmosis, neoplasia, dental issues, the list is endless but we can’t be sure until we take a close look at her. The foal, that we have called Bubble because of her bubbly personality, seems to be as energetic as they come and healthy.
The rest of the mares seem to be doing better. Remy, the smaller one seems to have taken on the role of lead mare, even with the advanced state of her pregnancy. She’s twice her normal size on each side of her belly, ready to pop any moment. Tessa, the dun mare, seems to be the one that’s closer to Remy in her due date, also extremely huge but she’s a bigger mare and it doesn’t show as much. She seems to be doing just fine, taking it easy, sometimes gets a little behind when the herd is moving but she’s quick to catch up.
She seems just happy to be there while the rest of them are actively trying to work towards their survival, and she has gotten really close with the other bay mare, Koda. They’re truly just joint at the hip at this point.
The last mare is Lily, the only paint in this herd. She seems awfully young, maybe around two years old if lucky but she has become quite a personality, she’s obsessed with Glit and will make it her life mission to annoy the hell out of him.
This morning, however, he wasn’t around when we found the mares, I could spot him a few miles down the hill, probably investigating an… odd smell, a sound. I thought it might have been the echo from the engine as we were coming up with the buggy, but how can one be sure. They are incredibly perceptive, and fascinating. The way the mares just locked together, almost with their tails touching in formation to protect each other from possible threats was a great example of herd unity.
I can’t wait to see if these guys become regulars in this area, I’d love to see little Bubble grow up.

When herds cross paths, things can get hairy between tensions. As food becomes scarcer with the changing seasons it drives horses to cross paths. Bubble isn't watching where she is going and accidentally gets kicked by one of the rowdier adults from another herd!
