IDRIS SE How a Legend Ends pt5  Some time later, Sal and Stratus reach the clearing where the Driller was to demonstrate its powers. With Jack incapacitated, they could afford to travel at their leisure at this point.
  Almost immediately, a group of palace guards runs up to meet them.
  "Sire! Former contestant Spring Heeled Jack has escaped and we believe you are in danger!"
  "You're banished."
  "... I'm sorry, your majesty?"
  "But if you run and tell Everett that Jack stuck in a box in the surrounding forest, and if you make it your top priority to make sure he's locked up PROPPERLY, maybe I'll overturn my ruling."
  "Y-yes, your majesty."
  The men run off. Stratus sighs and rubs his temples. He walks over to the fallen Driller, where Scrap lay hugging his great machine, Sonar trying to console the mechanic.
  "Por que, mi amore? Por que? Why is the world so cruel to you?"
  Stratus glances over the machine. S

IDRIS SE How a Legend Ends pt4  The wooden ringmaster looming over him, Sal chooses his response carefully.
  "... he wasn't able to keep up with me. We got separated at least half a mile back."
  Jack snaps his fingers. "Drat. Just my luck."
  He turns to leave, but just as Sal almost exhales in relief, Jack swings around and kicks out. Combat honed reflexes kick in and Sal dives and rolls under the attack. Sal exits the roll into a kneeling position and re-aims his gun.
  Jack glares. "It's unwise to lie to a professional liar, lad."
  "Worth a shot, I figured," Sal confesses, risking a small smile.
  'Well, here's the point of no return,' he thinks to himself. 'Either I can change the future or... well, if I'm just going to end up as a footnote in a history book, might as well make it for doing something brave.
  '...I wonder if I ever read about myself without realizing it.'
  Jack is on the attack. He lifts a leg to stomp

IDRIS SE How a Legend Ends pt3  "Ladies and gentlemen, step right up, don't be shy! Come see the bestial hyena man and his amazing heap of moving junk!"
  "Junk!? I'll make you take that back, demonio!"
  The Driller jabs with its noisy, whirling drill. Jack dodges by leaping over the blow and comes down on the battle mech with both feet. Instead of landing on the pilot's head, Scrap manages to raise the driller's arms up to block the blow. Jack does not relent, however, and rains stomp after stomp upon the Driller's upturned limbs, a skull-shattering riverstomp dance that quickly starts to dent and warp the Driller's armor.
  "Baja mi amore!" Scrap barks. He yanks a lever and the Driller's right arm re-aims. With a great plume of steam, its drill rockets out from the arm, grazing Jack's side. It tears through clothing and carves a great gash up his torso, and the ringmaster is knocked aside. He tumbles to the ground but quickly picks himself up and springs away, dodging a cr

IDRIS SE How a Legend Ends pt2  "Mr. Salvador! Just the man I wanted to see."
  Sal, homesick soldier from the future, turns to find Prince Stratus bearing down on him.
  "Out for a stroll, are we?" the prince inquires.
  Sal almost shrugs but swiftly stands up straight instead, as his military background has taught him to.
  "Yes. I just wanted to clear my head. I've had a few things on my mind lately."
  "Well, you can think about them as we walk," Stratus replies dismissively. "I'm not allowed to travel without some manor of protection, and since a member of my army is already here, I see no need to waste time tracking down one of Everett's men. You'll be my escort for the evening. This way!"
  The prince sets off and Sal obediently follows. Already on the outskirts of the city, they head further out, making towards a grove of trees a short distance from the ring of buildings making up the city's property line.
