There is a (non represented) central mass at the center of the canvas. Particles, or planets, thus orbit around the mass while leaving a very thin white mark.
Every 10 000 years, their trace opacity doubles, and every 40 000 years it gets back to normal level. This effect is the origin of the tartan texture.
Planets fade out after 250 000 years.

It is also noteworthy that a total of 60 000 planets contribute to the final drawing.
So not really a billion. I acknowledge that 'Sixty thousand' was a little less poetic :D
