ACT 1: The Rise of a King
Scene 1: Birth and Childhood
(The screen opens with a map of Europe in the mid-8th century. The camera then shifts to a small, royal household in the Frankish Kingdom.)
Narrator (VO - James Brackett):"In 747, the man who would one day be called the 'Father of Europe' was born. Charles, known to history as Charlemagne, entered the world as the son of Pepin the Short, the first Carolingian King of the Franks."
(A young boy, Charlemagne, plays with his siblings in the court, running freely but under the watchful eye of his mother, Bertrada of Laon.)
