Inking Mike Collins pencils 1

Hi there people!

I was fortunate enough to spend a lovely evening in the Ramada Bar chatting with comics legend Mike Collins at the recent Bristol International Comics Expo.

During the evening the subject of my lettering came up and as Mike happened to be looking for a letterer to work with him on an upcoming project I fished out my portfolio and handed him a copy of Alpha Gods (which I lettered). Suffice it to say that I should be working with Mike in the future in as a letterer.

Now, of course, my portfolio is primarily an inking portfolio, and Mike took the opportunity to have a thorough look through and seemed to like what he saw. So he asked me if he could send me a few pages of his pencils, so that he could see what they look like with my inks over them.

I've been pretty busy since Bristol and have only had the time to do two pages so far, which I've just sent off to Mike. I hope he likes them.

I thought I'd share them with you guys too, as I haven't posted anything new in a while.

This one's from Captain Britain!

Quite possible THE best page of inks you've done! Beautifully done! (Hope this makes up for the previous comments, Lol!)

I think Mr Collins will be very pleased to say the least.

You think so? Hmmm...I don't know...I really beat myself up over this page...think I was feeling the pressure as the characters mean so much to me...

nice work- your inking is coming along nicely- still digital?
IanDSharman's avatar
Yup, still digital.

cool-gotta learn it one day:D-what sortware do you use?

I'm using Illustrator. You need to fiddle with the set up of the tools and create some custom brushes, it's not really digital inking ready out of the box. I need to give Manga Studio a go really, as that's specifically designed with digital inking in mind.

thanx for the info:)

Of course, I'd add that digital inks, done right, should be pretty much indistinguishable from traditional inks...

i'm still old school- but would imagine digital inking does away with the hassle's and aggravation of bad paper tearing under the nib and paper/ink bleeds---

It does away with a lot of the hassles, yes, especially as, well, 100% of the inking I do is from scans that are emailed to me. It means I can get inking as soon as the scans arrive. It's also nice to have an "undo" option...heh...

I do find that it's slower than traditional inking, but then I think part of that is that it gives me the control to be as meticulous in my inking as I've always wanted to be. I'm speeding up though as I become more familiar with the toolset.

You're welcome, I was talking with Dan Didio a couple of weeks ago and he said that DC are looking more for digital inkers now...
