*I know this will make some people angry and rush to message defensive notes at me, but this needs to be said*
I know the title is a bit ironic as the majority of them usually don't like to read anything longer than a tweet. The ME generation thinks they invented new concepts to make us a better society, in order to cover up their all-consuming narcissism and ignorance of even the most basic homonyms.
*Environmental awareness* First, no, you didn't invent the whole "SAVE THE PLANET! movement." The first environmental group in the United States was founded by John Muir on May 28, 1892. Not a Millennial invention--your generation made the Selfie Stick.
*Recycling* Secondly, no you didn't invent recycling. According to American Disposal Services, "The first recorded use of recycled paper was in 9th Century Japan." Not a Millennials Invention--Millennials invented "bae." So proud.
*Vegetarianism and dietary fads* Third. PBS states, " The term “vegetarian” replaced Pythagorean on September 29, 1847 in Ramsgate, England." In 1820, Lord Byron started the dietary fad of only eating potatoes soaked in vinegar which turns out to be as unhealthy and inane as the latest gluten-free fad for those who DON'T have Celiac disease.
Not a Millennial invention--your generation made "vaping," so that is your creation.
*Gender Identity and Androgyny* Fourth. The BSRI (Bem Sex Role Inventory) was invented by Sandra Bem in 1977 to "classify having one of four gender role orientations: masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated characteristics."
Not a Millennial invention--your generation made Social Justice Warriors that are ready, willing and able to be offended by everything and anything.
Don't get triggered or even bother looking for a "safe space." Yes my comments are barbed, but undeniable TRUTH. If you're actually still reading this instead of thinking out a scolding, offended, triggered reply, my point is that each generation WANTS to feel special. Each generation erroneously assumes that they're more special and so much better than the previous generation. Gen Xers (my gen) are NOT like Millennials in that we do NOT blame the generation before us (Baby Boomers) for every single one of our problems. We take responsibility for ourselves and more importantly, accountability for our actions.
No, don't say that we Gen Xers created you Millennials. Baby Boomers like my parents, had me in '71 and kept having kids all the way to my youngest sibling born in 83. Baby Boomers raised 2 generations, but by the time Gen ME came around, our parents were trying to make up for not raising us "Latch Key Kids." We had the "same" parents, just at different ages and stages of life.
While the Baby Boomers were rebelling against THEIR parents with environmental causes, recycling, veganism and sexual freedom, they left us Gen Xers to raise ourselves. Then when they put away their hippie clothes and protest signs, they came around to raising you Millennials.
So in conclusion, I consider the Gen X/Millennial rivalry to be of mostly a sibling sort of dissension. So instead of blaming everyone but our own individual selves for our shortcomings, let's start at the source and improve from there. Don't take life so seriously--no one gets out alive!
