Description
Once Tarimhesaurus, the Persian dragon, was distributed over large parts of the middle east and dryer part of east Asia. Marco Polo maybe meant these dragons when writing his journals. The holotype of this species was collected in the Tarim basin, a region where these guys can no longer be met.
In difference to all other living and extinct confuciosaurids this species prefers semiarid to arid habitats (but there are evidences that they inhabited steppe and open woodland once too). Their barbels are longer than those of Umbragrus but no longer have the function to sense movement in murky water.
The snout is long and the teeth more robust then those of its semi aquatic relatives, the legs are also a little longer and of course, the coloration of these animals is more fittig for their dry environment. This detail actually made it into the Islamic mythology: iranpoliticsclub.net/culture-l…
Another example: www.spongobongo.com/FRTz4.jpg
While the oriental dragon art began to be hugely influenced by Chinese dragon art (for reasons still discussed) the dragons still remained evil and demon like in character.
Tarimhesaurus grows up to 3,3 long and can reach a wingspan of 4,8 m. Instead of fish, waterfowl and amphibians this species hunts birds like MacQueen's bustards and reptiles like lizards and snakes but mostly wild sheeps, goats and gazelles and occasionally young or old camels. In difference to wyvernids which grab and kill their prey open with their huge talons Tarimhesaurus often chases its prey over longer distances- according to some sources even on purpose toward cliffs and gorges- and tries to bite it or blind it with their venom. Smaller prey is often hunted on foot and with their long necks they can reach into burrows where they search for and foxes, pikas, jerboas and snakes.
Like in Umbragrus males and females are nearly identical. Males impress potential partners with a mating dace of flapping wings, high rising torso and low rumbling sounds. The nest is build and the young are cared for by the female only. The nest is a mount of shrubs and rocks build under a overhanging rock, the 2 or 3 eggs are nearly white. Like other confuciosaurids Tarimhesaurus aren't able to fly right away after hatching, in this case the draclings stay in the nest for up to 3 weeks and are fed by the mother, then they leave the nest, still not able to fly but to fall softly. For another two weeks they follow their mother when ever possible, but they begin to care for themselves too, hunting small lizards, insects, scorpions and solifuges.
Most draclings don't survive these first months, the harsh conditions of the Karakum and the Dasht-e Kavir, Indian wolves and stripped hyenas make it very hard of the juveniles to reach adulthood.
Tarimhesaurus was maybe the dragon I was most eager to update, such a ugly first drawing: www.deviantart.com/art/Tarimhe…
On the other hand, he got pretty nice feet later: www.deviantart.com/art/Feet-pl…
Umbragrus and Cunfuciosaurus have basically the same feet, but they feature webbed toes instead.
Edit: some recent observations may indicate that they occasionally eat fruits too, especially dates.
