A 20 minute drawing of the double sickle claw bird Balaur bondoc.
Newer studies indicate that this animal wasn't a dromeosaur at all but a sister taxon of the Pygostylia, somewhere between animals like Jeholornis and the Omnivoropterygidae.
For this drawing I used skeletal drawings of Balaur, Jeholornis and Sapeornis, the tail is inspired by oviraptorsaurs like Nomingia.

Sapeornis by Scott Hartman: th07.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i…
Jeholornis by Scott Hartman: fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/201…
Balaur: public.media.smithsonianmag.co…

Note the similarity of Sapeornis and Balaur wings.

P.s. This picture is the fruit of a recent discussion produced by :icontraheripteryx: and his own birdy reconstruction of Balaur.

Edit: And finally Cau, Naish and Brougham published their new paper about the relationship of Balaur to the rest of the avian or non avian tree
:iconqilong: produced a skeletal drawing which is surprising close to this very sketchy portrait: www.deviantart.com/art/The-Sto…
And :iconewilloughby: produced a fantastic life restoration based on these new data: www.deviantart.com/art/Balaur-…

I don't exactly get what makes Balaur part of aves now. It has all dromaeosaur traits.

I encourage you to follow the links in the description and to read the article on Wikipedia.
Especially hands and feet show characters which are found in primitive birds, for more info read the
classification chapter: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balaur_b…

If I may ask, what drawing utensils did you use to make this stunning sketch (pencils, sketchpad, etc), unless it is digital. In which case, which program did you use?

Pencil on paper with white ink for the highlights.

What brand of pencils did you use?

Faber Castell... but it's actually doesn't matter which pencils someone use.

I've been meaning to do the same thing, but decided to hold off until it is officially published. Good to see an interpretation in the meantime.

I actually didn't knew that there was a paper on the way but was surprised when Jaime said that this isn't far from the skeletal drawing! =)
