Eyes of the desert

A spontaneous little painting from Nea. (no project is ever really dead, no project is ever finished)

There are certain architectonic structures that are best appreciated from space, or at least far from the ground. Desert eyes are such structures. They are a common sight often being just a few kilometers apart, "build" within the central desert. Besides being pretty cool when viewed from above they the characteristic form has a function. 
The raw build is produced by injecting massive amounts of microorganisms into the dunes, together with water and nanites. The microbes begin to transform the sand into compact sandstone, the foundation of the desert eye. The rock that has formed is now excavated, uncovering the walls and keep flying sand at bay, because of the constant northeastern wind the outer wall is lens shapes to make wind and sand "flow" around it. To further stop the disappearance of the structure, and to provide food and shade for the inhabitants, lots of trees and bushes are planted between the walls. The walls and the central ring reach deep into the ground forming a artificial sinkhole after removing the sand. Here living modules are "glued" to the rock connected through bridges and ladders, at its bottom the sinkhole houses a water reservoir, connected to a underground system of aqueducts fed by fossil groundwater and atmospheric moisture.   

P.s. most energy comes from wind turbines build on the edges of the walls, not really visible here but I thought I should add that. In addition there are fog collectors on the outer most wall, and a electrostatic field at the opening of the sinkhole keeps dust and light sand out.
