Corytholurus africanus is one of the best known and still numerous dragon species, but it's taxonomic position is a matter of long discussions. Newer genetical studies suggest that the animal stands near the lophoraptorids but there are no fossil evidences which could clarify the relationship. The only other species of the genus, C. presimilis extinct during the late Pliocene (2,8 million years ago) and showed not many differences to it's extant relative.
