A collaboration of Smnt2000 [link] and me. He made the drawing [link] , I color it.
His discription:

"Chiropterimimus cretacicus ("Cretaceous Bat-Imitator") is the oldest member we've discovered of the dragon lineage, from the Campanian-Maastrichtian.
This animal is the basal-most species of these flying reptiles, an animal very close to the ancestry of all dragons and possibly very similar (or at least related) to the missing link between monitor lizards and their winged cousins.
Its remains are found all over the world, from Canada to Japan, with fine-preserved specimens from Germany and a fully articulated one from the Liburnia Formation in Italy (the same deposit where the hadrosauroid Tethyshadros was found). The body is overall very similar to that of modern varanids, but the arms are very different. It shows us that the wings of dragons are convergent to that of bats but in a different way, with only the II-III-IV-V digits covered by the patagium (the digit I actually seems to be lost in their evolution).
This little carnivore have not the muscles and the anatomy for flying like its successors, so it could glide only for short distances.

Lenght: 1.5-1.8 m
Wingspan: 1-1.2 m
Habitat: Forest, Swamps
Radiation: Germany, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Brasil, Korea, Italy
Diet: Small mammals, lizards, eggs, insects"

I have nothing more to say, was very fun =)

Their evolution makes so much sense and sounds so plausible, you just wonder what could have prevented them evolving and surviving to present day.

im suprised you havent made a lineage thats more convergent with bats, by that i mean in the sense that they use their back and shoulder muscles for powered flight instead of a large breastbon

I used mainly birds and pterosaurs for the design but there are also a few bat quotes. i would have liked to include more bat anatomy but it's really difficult to get good references.

well heres how they fly because they dont have large breast bones like most of your dragons, www.theatlantic.com/technology…

Just wondering are these dragons cold blooded like the varanids or are they warm-blooded? Really cool

Thanks =)
This primitive member was cold blooded, but later they become warm-blooded.
