So a week ago Flower Girl got a Daily Deviation and my message box kind of exploded.  I'm glad you all liked it!  I'd like to thank Ihlosih for suggesting it and Moonbeam13 for featuring it.  I haven't gotten around to replying to any of the comments yet, but I'll be doing that soon.  I've been pretty busy with my last full semester in school.  I've got some assignments that I'm pretty excited about, so I'll be posting some unfinished/work in progress images to my Tumblr if anyone is interested.

So again, thanks for the +fav's, comments, and everything!

Almost finished with a short animation thing I am working on.  A few frames need adjusted, and then it's just sounds after that.  Could still be a few days or a week at this point, with the end of the semester wrapping up and all the internship application deadlines coming up at the same time.

Another semester over in my career as a student.  A lot of things happened, and I learned quite a bit.  I worked on a couple of shorts for a professor to pitch to PBS, I made a short comic for a student anthology book titled Reality Not Included (which I'll start posting once I've got access to computer with Photoshop), I went to CTN, and took on 14 credit hours with projects that I'll post once I've gotten a chance to polish them to my liking.

CTN was a fun and informative experience with a lot of cool opportunities.  I got to see Rise of the Guardians at Dreamworks and Wreck-it Ralph at Disney, attend panels given by experienced people in the industry, and show my reel to representatives at Disney's booth of the expo floor, thanks to a friend who lent me his MacBook to do so.  It was also a bit of a wake-up call.  For one, using a USB-drive to hold my portfolio was a terrible idea since those reviewing my portfolio to have a computer to bring it up on (being my first CTN, I didn't know what to expect so a lot was done last-minute).  I also realized that I need to devote more time towards my focus than just working on a wider variety of areas in animation.  I don't have much of an interest in shader programming, and my work in that class wasn't all that great and it ate into time for projects in other classes that I wanted to put more effort into.  I also should have taken the animation track for the 3d Animation class instead of taking the modeling and rigging track.

The lack of a portable computer issue has been resolved, at least.  I've ordered a Samsung ATIV 700t, a Windows 8 tablet powerful enough to run Photoshop and Toon Boom, and has a Wacom tablet sensor for pressure-sensitive pen input along with regular touch input.  It will be especially useful these next few weeks as I am home for the holidays and don't have access to my desktop PC.

Back in Utah.  Finally have a wi-fi card in my computer.  Just at the start of the second week in the semester, and I already have 8 projects going on at the same time.

I guess a short update is in order.  Currently I've been working on an animated short film that one of my animation professors is putting together, and working on a short comic for an anthology a bunch of people in the animation program are butting together to show at CTN this fall.  I've also gotten a Tumblr account, and put together a fancy little info box to use with DA's lack of CSS options in journal posts for free accounts. :p

I've been meaning to post a new one since the start of the year, but I keep getting distracted (if you can count school as a distraction).  The first three weeks were a little rough, since I caught whatever cold was going around in California around New Year's, then got whatever was going around in Utah after I got over the that.  I also turned 26 last month, and then realized that when my dad was my age, I was alive.

In school, we've finally started animating in Maya this semester, which has been a fun challenge.  I've finally found Maya's autosave feature and enabled that, so using Maya is a ton less stressful now.  So far I'm working on the third of four projects, the first two which I've already posted here now that I can post in the Film and Animation category.  I'm also retaking Drawing For Animation.  It was very fun and educational the first time around, and I'm still learning new things this second time.  I get to have the coolest homework ever.  I'll also be in Ryan Woodward's half-semester Experimental Animation class when it starts up at the end of the month.

I should also mention that the student animation, DreamGiver, that I helped out on during the fall of 2010 is finally online!  I worked on 2D animation cleanup and coloring.

Unfinished project status:
The second 3D still-life image from last semester's Maya class: rendering - refraction and non-grainy depth-of-field are very taxing on rendering time, apparently.  Finally have enough time to have my computer spend the next few days rendering it out.
60 Seconds to Deliver - Flash game - Currently on permanent hiatus.  Not sure how I like how things had been going with this project.
Bridges of the Mertynn - Flash game - On hiatus while school-related projects take priority.
Not sure if I'm forgetting anything.
I realize that my previous journal may have been a bit confusing.  In short, since late August, I was accepted to the animation program at Brigham Young University, changing from an Animation Pre-Major status to a full on Animation Major status.  Since it's taken so long to get here, I have almost all of my general ed. requirements done, meaning the only classes I need to take are the fun animation-related ones. :D   Maybe I can see how many minors I can get through before graduating.  I'm already three classes away from minoring in Computer Science.

Je suis maintenant étudier françois, aussi.

I've also been trying to find work, though I don't think it helps that most of my past job locations don't even exist any more. Putting phone numbers on the application doesn't help when their disconnected or go to a different place now. I think one of them goes to some guy's house. It also doesn't help that I'm competing with actual computer-science majors for a lot of them. If anyone wants to commission artwork from me, just send me an Note with a few details of what you want and I'll get back to you with a price to negotiate with.
Okay, I give up. After 3 years of being an animation PREmajor, I've had enough. Not having a real major, and having applied 7 times, it's just too much. My major status has changed, and now I'm trying something that might actually go somewhere.

I'm now an animation major.
So I got into the Tournament of Flash Artists last month, during Spring semester at BYU, so naturally the deadline for Round 1 and finals both happened on this same weekend.  I wasn't able to complete my entry, so I submitted where I'd gotten.  The animatic and my progress is located here: www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/e…
I'm really enjoying where I've been able to get so far, so expect to see this finished within the next few months!

My opponent's awesome entry, titled "Hamster Renegade," can be found here: www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/c…

We'll find out who goes on to Round 2 on Monday, though the beginning of next week includes finals and packing everything into my car for the 670 mile trip home for the summer.
Well, I survived TOFA's open round, and I'm now going on to the first of the elimination rounds.  The theme is "Lost and Found," and the deadline is the 9th of June.  I don't have any ideas leaping out at the moment, but I'll think of something.  Fortunately we're all getting an extra week for these rounds, so my next entry will be better and have more actual animation.

Also, here's a video of a kitten fighting a scary thing.
Yay, finals are done.  The only grade I'm currently worried about is Intro to Greek and Roman Literature, but as long as I get a D, it clears a general ed. category.  I don't plan on going to graduate school, and my planned job field doesn't care about University GPA anyways. :p

That means I have time to do more art and game programming stuff again, but I probably won't be up to anything until I sleep off this cold I got right before finals started.  The Tournament of Flash Artists starts next Monday, which I'd like to try out.  The History of Animation class I took has given me some ideas on streamlining animations made on small deadlines, and I've got a lot of styles I want to try out.  It should be fun.

Oh, and here's a video of a tiny penguin.
So yay, new account, my old gallery is located here: :iconmcbooga: and I will be uploading some old things, but the new ones will have to wait since Newegg didn't ship my new scanner until today. :(

Christmas break was great, though I was unable to work on things since my laptop has tripped Toshiba's "security feature," which permanently locks me out of my entire system.  Only Toshiba knows the password to unlock the system, meaning I have to send it in to get it fixed, which costs money (from what I've found, only one guy actually sent it in, but was charged $150), so they're effectively holding the system for ransom. :x  The data's still safe, the heard drive didn't go bad, but I had to wait until I was back from break where I would have a computer that could be used to get things off of it.  The entire break I was reduced to using a PC that I built inside a 1989 Macintosh SE.

As for this year, my goals are to get into the animation program at BYU, find a job since I can't use my laptop for freelancing anymore, and try to get some of my other projects completed.  Hopefully I'll be able to upload some new stuff on Wednesday, if everything goes right with the shipping.
