Whalewolf Concept 1 by Hydrothrax Whalewolf Concept 1 by Hydrothrax

Okay I think I’ll finally post these :’D since I keep seeing new posts of them floating around!

“Whalewolf” concept art for the new Sharktopus movie coming out this July!

The very first version of this guy was actually more of a 50/50 hybrid with fins instead of rear legs but since they needed the character to have more land mobility, that was dropped in favor of legs (which really makes Whalewolf look like Akhlut, I’ve noticed lots of people pointing that out.) Maybe that initial sleek version might be posted sometime later as a bonus on Tumblr, hehe.

And yes I’m also aware that the Orca is not a “whale!” On this one the name kinda came first, I figured the “Killer whale” mixed better with the wolf aspect, it’s also a nod to the evolution of cetaceans, a thing a few people have also picked up it seems :D

There are other hints and reasons for why things were done the way they were here but I won’t spoil it all!

Cool. I seen the movie once. B movies have horrible acting btw, but you got to love the creative creatures they make, like yours. :)

Cool.

Shame, though really. You're quite the talented creature designer; shame to see your talents wasted on B-Level SyFy Movies. Don't get me wrong, it's a living, and it must be awesome to see your works in movies, but given your talent, I think you could be working for much better than simple SyFy.

It actually was just a side project, I've done a couple things for them at this point but what I'm primarily training for is industrial design! Which doesn't show very well on this page since DA has more or less personal work and the creature-only stuff, but that's a far more solid industry to be in. Ideally, I'd love to balance those two sides of my work down the road. :D But I agree, it'd be pretty cool to get into some feature production stuff if at all possible, especially stuff that ties into set design (when a concept has to actually be built in reality, so like Oblivion's "bubbleship" and the mech interiors in Pacific Rim!) But we'll see. So far I'm really loving the industrial design world because of that practical element it has to it.

Sounds big.

Well, if you're good with it all, then I'll wish ya good luck in the future, and look forward to whatever you and SyFy whip up next! :) (Smile)

The Whalewolf concept is kinda ironic, as whales in fact are believed to have evolved from wolf-like mammals living in Asia 50 million years ago :D

Yup! This design was a little reference to cetacean evolution!

Personally, I've always seen the Cetacean evolution-line (including species such as Pakicetus, Ambulocetus and Rodhocetus) as very interesting :D In fact, it's hard to believe that whales technically are aquatic artiodactyls, as there's no other animal on Earth that even looks like them ;)

Yes! Almost ironic as well considering land animals came from the sea - but then they decided to go back!

Ah, Syfy. You never disappoint me.
Also, did you know that there's actually a creature in Inuit mythology that looks a lot like this guy? It's called the Akhlut.

Yup, I noticed that, and lots of people have pointed it out. The very first version was much more aquatic but I was asked to make it more land-based with four legs which definitely made it more like an Ahkut!

Makes sense-you want it to be a threat on both land and sea.

This is a fantastic creature design! I saw the movie on TV today, and was curious if I could find any good images of the monster - so it was really cool to find this. :) (Your artwork blows the 3D model away of course.) I love how you made it look like a true mix of the two animals rather than just a wolf with whale fins tacked on to it and vice versa. The Orca idea works great too, considering they are called the "wolves of the sea". Thank you for sharing!

Yup! Many people are comparing this critter to the Akhlut myth - that wasn't' the initial intention but it makes a nice coincidence! (originally this design was more aquatic, giving him rear legs really put him in that category haha!)

You got to do creature concept art for a Sy-fy movie?  That's so awesome!

I love this guy's design~!  It's cool, sleek, yet still looks anatomically possible.  Wonderful work~.
