Look for the viewports ;)

On top of the fact that these creatures don't solely rely on regular color vision to sense their environments.

oh i see! I would think that vehicle beasties would have good hearing, maybe to distinguish their own 'breed' from others, and to hear when possible predators or trying to sneak up or somfin'

(hahah though some monster machines might be less stealthy then others XD)

In many cases however sound would be very unreliable - their primary sensing ability ranges across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Although some are more advanced than others, and have different sensory toolsets - it depends on the vehicle type!

Ah! of course haha, like boat and sub monsters would have radar and sonar and stuffs~
I bet stealth vehicles have night vision XD

Exactly :'D

And infra-red vision is more common in these guys than you might think!

Well as infrared is pretty common on military vehicals, I guess all the military critters would have that XD

Oh! Oh! But what about one of my faves, the Bloodhound doggies? I think you said they don't have eyes, so what senses to they use?

i43.tinypic.com/5o9oqu.jpg radar is their primary "sight" as well as what aerosaurs use to see things beyond visual range, like the actual aircraft.

When is your next EPIC beast coming out? I am just dying to see your awesome vehicles. You should try the M50 Ontos. :) (Smile)

M50s are pretty neat, with all those ridiculous recoilless guns stuck on em! I haven't had time to work on personal art however so things will be super slow, hopefully later this year I can post more regularly again :D

So I was staring at this fine creature at work today while I was trying to figure out how I'm going to get this PLC to pull 1,500 packets of data every 50 milliseconds, aaaannd I may have had my train of though wander away from work.
But that's okay! Because it occurred to me, I know you put a ton of detail and thought into your creatures, but do you ever think about what goes on inside? Is she flesh and bone? Metal and machine? Bit of both? Oil for blood and diesel in her stomach? What about her bones, her guts, her heart? How does it all work?
Of course after thinking about that for a few minutes I had an idea to solve my problem, but anyway, true story xD

I like this one a lot, she is beautiful. I especially like her nose.

Holy crud late-ass response, sorry there!

There is DEFINITELY a whole system to how these work internally, and it differs dramatically between vehicle types because you can't use the same approach for say, an armored vehicle vs a light aircraft. Also the nature of their existence differs in what world/state they're existing - Aetherworld stuff tends to defy physics since it doesn't really exist there (that's an explanation in itself) but for the "material world" (aka alternate Earth in this story) they're very mechanical.

None of these guys have any flesh/organic tissue in them though - pound for pound, it's not strong enough for the stresses creatures of their scale take, and it's also far too frail (and heavy, for flying types.) You could only pull that off with scaled down versions but you'd need to change a lot of other things. Overall I feel like it doesn't make sense.

So these guys are 100% machine, bases on a nano-cell system - just the bio-mimicry can be so strong in some cases that they can appear organic (again, best seen in the avians.) If you want all their workings in full detail, note me with what your questions are and I'll elaborate - it can get very detailed. And even more weird because of their ability to change shape, to a limited extent.

Glad you like her, she's one of my fav wheeled characters I've got so far. :D

As I always tell you, no worries about late replies, I don't mind. Also, no pressure to reply at all. :]

I really am fond of this nano-cell idea. I'm pleased to find that you do in fact think about these guys inside and out.
I wonder what her "skin" would feel like, smooth I'm sure, maybe much like metal, except not quite so ridged? Lots of interesting things to think about.
So do these guys need to eat? What sort of power source?
What level of intelligence do they posses?
I guess there is just so much that I don't know the right questions to ask.
You wouldn't by chance have any of this written down would you? Do you have any stories or literature? Obviously you've got a few worlds going on in your head (I know what that's like, except yours are actually interesting), and I am interested in learning more about them.

The texture really can vary. On an armored vehicle you will have large stiff sections of armor, but the thinner areas and around the joints it can get almost skin-like. Even the rubber material is reinforced with a lattice of nanocells within it, letting it hold its form but more importantly, be able to self repair and be able to sense touch/pressure, and temperature. Aircraft would be super smooth to the touch, almost eerily so, especially when they move - since the material doesn't really make folds or move exactly like skin does, but aside from stretching and compressing, material can be actively shifted around so it almost looks fluid. (The more advanced the vehicle basis is, the more fancy shit it can pull off. For example an advanced aerosaur can actively change its airfoil/overall shape while in flight, in any mode, to increase efficiently. They have more control over their nanocells whereas an older type can really only shift between two modes that are "pre programmed."

They're pretty smart, intelligence tends to be proportional to how advanced a machine is. So aircraft would be pretty smart, but spacecraft, submarines and things that control entire systems like a carrier or space station would be absolute powerhouses. I have a few cases where there are semi-sentient machines like artillery which are on the other end of the spectrum there. But yeah the vehicle guys tend to have human-level intelligence and beyond.

As for what they eat - fuel, and anything that they can synthesize to make it, so they'll go for anything that's got hydrocarbons. The purer the fuel source, the less energy they need to put into converting/filtering it so they prioritize that. They CAN eat organic matter but it tends to make them "sick" after a while, they don't get a lot out of it and it's kind of a wasteful process. They also will eat anything they need - a damaged machine can "eat" metal and whatever it needs, convert it to nano-cells of the correct type and repair itself, given it had the energy to do so. So yes other living metal is perfect for them, and it's not unusual for them to cannibalize each other if it comes down to it. They're practical and don't get queasy about that idea. :"D
Oh and yeah that's for internal combustion engines. Electric machines have a bit of a different system - they don't need to carry or convert fuel but the problem is that they have to generally get it from an external source, so they're more vulnerable in that sense.

I do have some chunks here and there written down but there's so much crap that I don't have the time/focus to get it all down and in one place. It's also in part stored visually as doodles and whatnot. Most of the stories are in my head though I've got a few that are being co-written with a very close friend, though that has barely scratched the surface. (One of these days I need to make a book or something hahaha!) I can dump what I've got though, things like headword summaries, though I'd prefer to spam that in notes/email rather than on here. Then I can tell you about some of the stories as well with specific characters, there are many!!
