Huldra and Troll by humon Huldra and Troll by humon
Finally she’s here: The huldra (Or “skogsrå” in Swedish).

Huldras are extremely beautiful from the front, but from the back they have a cow’s tail and a hollow back “like an old tree trunk”. In some stories, if you saw the back, her spell would be broken and she would turn out to be horribly ugly.

They want to be human, and the only way to do that is to marry one. The poor guy who she picks as her victim won’t get an easy end. If he sees her from the back and says no to marrying her, she will kill him. If he marries her, she will kill him after having turned into a human. He just can’t win.

Huldras are usually said to be very self-conscious about their tail and back, and attacks anyone who points them out. This one is obviously a bit more relaxed about it. :XD:

They are sometimes said to have the tail of a fox, so I gave her red hair.
Huldras are only found in Norway and Sweden. In Denmark we have removed the tail and call them elves.

Huldra's can be charmed by sensitivity. There is a story about a young man who saw a huldra dressed as a woman. He knew she was a huldra because he could see her tail. He said 'Pardon me, miss but your petticoats are showing.' She thanked him and granted him good crops for the rest of his life.

The troll looks so confused, like "what the heck, where are your organs?!"

I've always enjoyed reading about creatures like Huldra and actually stumbled across a novel that kinda changed their stories around a bit. It's called "The Snow Queen" by Mercedes Lackey and she likes to twist well-known fairytales around a bit. In her story, the main heroine and her soon-to-be mother-in-law are journeying to save Kai (the fiance and son, respectively). On the way, they enter a forest full of Huldra. The mother-in-law explains their destiny of killing men to acquire souls (and ultimately become human). They young woman (whose name escapes me) is distraught by the Huldra's pain and begins to cry. Because of her pure heart, or something similar, each tear becomes a soul and turns each and every Huldra into something else. They aren't human, but they are no longer destined to kill every male they see.

It was really very beautiful and your wonderful drawing made me remember it.

This afternoon when I was watching the movie "Thale" about two men finding a Huldra, I wanted to draw a one and I instantly thought of you and had a feeling that would have already drawn one, because you draw so many mythical creatures :)

Eh why does she have to kill him after marriage.

Why cant she just do something like this "ok look listen buddy im gonna level with you, year i look excellent from the front and im really lonely and would like a lover, i can make all this horrible crap go away if you just marry me, ill magically turn human and it will be ALL good you dont even gotta stay with me, just let me become human and ill be on my merry way only takes 30 mins or an hour out of your day to FIX MY WHOLE LIFE"

Im sure someone would have the decency to help.

[link] Erm... this movie says its Nordic horror folklore but from your gallery the only thing I can tell this is is that it could be a younger slattenplatte, but I think it's more likely it's a huldra even though it does not have the hole in it's back.

((I heard that people in Iceland still build roads a certain way to stay away from the Huldras. So maybe they live in Iceland sometimes?))

I actually had heard of these critters, though somehow I thought they were called 'hulder.' So neat to find this!
NeeMiSo Featured By Owner Apr 7, 2012
I believe both 'huldra' and 'hulder' is correct.
a/one 'hulder'. The/that 'huldra'.

When I was a kid I was scared to death by the skogsrå and I actually once made my mom get me some water in the middle of the night just to make sure she wasn't hollow XDD
Midorikiss Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2012
I've read about something similar in Finnish folk stories also when I was a kid. She was called 'metsänneito' (forest maiden) and her back was like the bark of a spruce tree (is that the English name for that tree...? 'En gran' in Swedish) and she was ashamed to show it but could escape people and hide herself in the forest easily by only turning around. She wasn't as bloodthirsty as the huldra, though. I thought she was so cool... :3
FinnHorseGirl Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
There is Huldra-kind-of creatures in finnish mytology too. :meow: here they are called Metsänneitsyt, Metsänpiika or Metsänneito, like "forest-maiden" or something. :D They just don't look so troll-ish.

Yeah, I'm annoying. Deal with it.
