This piece is my depiction of a song. The song is called Bolero and it is from the film Moulin Rouge.

A Bolero is an instrumental piece with increasing tones. This increase of tones reminded me of fireworks.

The whole piece is based off this idea of fireworks and increasing tones. I saw red green and yellow fireworks while listening to the song some 500 times haha.

This is the scene that came into my head. It is a blend of east and west. Becuase fireworks are very eastern and Bolero is very western.

This theme continues in the two cultures I chose. Spanish and Chinese becuase they both have the colors green red and yellow in their identity.

The woman is western/spanish dancer and the raft she floats on is eastern/chinese dragon. The dragon is a composite of the 12 zodiac animals. The flowers are peoney and rose, both flowers that in blooming remind me of fireworks and are icons for the chinese and spanish. The flowers actually start at the bottom of the composition as buds and bloom in a increasing upward acendsion like fireworks. The chinese script is my best atempt at "bolero" in chinese characters.
The flowers and swans also mimic the ruffles in spanish flamenco dresses. The lotus are eastern and help to create the murky water world they are in.

This version is done but I would like to do a more full version where the woman is wearing spanish clothing (namely a bolero --the jacket and some ruffled clothing like a flamenco dress) and where the coloring style is more realistic and deeper/richer in color. I also would like to put in fireflies but I thought theyed be sill in this version. But for now Im happy with this watercolor look that I experimented with.

Art Nouveau IMO
I like the reduced colours, but get irritated through this BG texture. As if you made it on newspaper...

I just went back on the pieces I've faved and thought of dropping some nice comments. As I was thinking of what to say, I realized that you'd written a deep analysis on the work underneath it! I must say that it was a really pleasant surprise, professional artists say often quite little about their work. :)

There were several things that I wouldn't have realized at all without reading, and it was exhilarating to find out that there were so many ideas packed into one. Such as the flowers blooming like fireworks while going to the top, or the meaning of lotus etc. and the visual connection between bolero dresses and the flowers.

All is connected in a way that gives me new associations. :) Love the myriad visual contrasts between the two cultures, it shows you've really studied the two. :D  Keep it up!

I used to love the 'Bolero' from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack but nowyour pictuyre has made me adore it several times more. The colours laid on top of the line work gives it an oriental and aged appearance and overall I would just say amazing with extra zing.
