Easy LineArt Tutorial by HowXu Easy LineArt Tutorial by HowXu
Some people had asked me how do I make soft line in my Pranstershy series. Well, it is very easy. Just 4 simple steps in Photoshop, anyone could make line soft.:)

Phew~Finally I had finished my report today. I may start to work on my other comics.

Here are questions for the steps.
Step 01: The line art; is it vector or traditionally digital-drawn?
Step 03-04: Ok, I get setting it to blur, but what does it mean to "Adjust the opacity of the replicated image?" Can you please go into further detail in that.

1. Digital-drawn apparently, because PS is a Raster graphics program. However, same logic could be applied to vector image as well. You just need a right blur brush in your vector graphics program.

2. It's very simple. First, click the replicated layer in your layer panel. Second, click the opacity window which is located on the top of the layer panel. Third, type how many percent of the opacity you would like the replicated layer shows or simply nclick on the word "opacity" and drag left and right until satisfaction.

How do you do lineart with brush? sometimes i find it really hard with only a mouse :( Please help!

I use a tablet. Well, I really don't think mouse is capable for hand drawing. It could only afford to do the bezier-kurve. I think it would be better if you could purchase a tablet.

What's the reason for replicating the layer? Does it become too thin if you just blur the original layer? And the opacity changes just make it really subtle?
I've never used photoshop or done any digital art really so I'm just curious.

If we don't replicate that layer, the image will end up like the blur painting in step 3's blur preview screen which would be too vague to be lineart.

The opacity change is to determine how strong the effect which depends on what the image need.
For example, if I want to make a really soft line to create some kind of dream-world atmosphere, I'll use high opacity like what we see in step 3. If I simply feel the solid line is too stiff, I'll use low opacity like what we see in step 4.
