Happy Valentine's Day!
I'm so excited to share this with you! I was recently commissioned to make a wedding cake topper, which is a first for me. The bride requested a black dragon with a white d20 and a white dragon with a black d20, both with red accents. My usual dragons are about two inches tall and hold mini dice, which would look a bit sad on a cake, so I scaled them up and used standard-sized d20s - these are both three inches tall. Doesn't sound like much of a difference, but an inch increase in height equates to something like four times the volume? Kind of crazy!
The white dragon has been dusted with pearly white mica powder and has a line of gorgeous red rhinestones running down her back. Seriously, they are the prettiest - I usually favor cool colors, but now I want to use these red rhinestones everywhere. Her horns and wings are made with Premo's magenta pearl, which, interestingly enough, looks like a more silvery version of the (discontinued) red pearl that I used for the black dragon. Also, did you notice that I placed the dice so that they display '2014'?
I am really not used to working at this scale, and made two "failed" test dragons that weren't the right size before I finally got a properly sized armature figured out (they failed to be cake topper material, but are otherwise pretty awesome - more on that next week). Despite the trouble that these two put me through, I am happy with the end result, and the bride was thrilled. I guess that makes this a success!
