Paintbrush Fairy Dragon

This is the second of five dragons for a customer's 5th anniversary/Christmas. This is my take on his girlfriend's tattoo - a multi-hued fairy dragon holding a paintbrush.

This has to be up there as one of the most complicated designs I've ever worked on! I tried so many different things for the fluff down the back, but I wasn't happy with any of my attempts, so I ended up going for the single strand mane approach (which everyone does and it kind of annoys me that I had to resort to it). But it's what looks best, so I guess there's a reason for that! I feel like I work in layers for these sorts of complicated designs, expanding outward from something simple to something much more complicated. For this project, I first made a plain white dragon, then I brushed on the blue pigment, then I added the purple accents, and finally I added the gold spots. So many tiny gold spots, all made out of clay! Next time I'll paint - I think it would go much faster and look just as good.

I actually made this dragon last out of the set of five because the design was complicated and I was really uncertain about making a decent-looking paintbrush. I am happy with the result, though. I think that brushing on blue pigment was the right call, and I like how bright the overall result is.

Crafted from colored Premo polymer clay, bugle beads, and Jacquard Pearl-Ex mica powders.

Nice! I like how good the blue and white look together; it makes me think of seafoam, with little purple kelp bits bobbing around in the waves.
