Black Opal Dragon by HowManyDragons Black Opal Dragon by HowManyDragons

You might recall that I tried my hand at making a black opal dragon about a year ago. I made a couple versions, and while the second attempt (Black Opal Dragon - Version 2) was pretty good, it wasn't quite perfect.

I decided to revisit the idea, using the techniques that I'd picked up from my recent 'watercolor' and 'dichro' experiments, and I'm proud to say that THIS was what I'd been picturing when I started the whole endeavor - a pure black backdrop with opalescent shimmer on top, and no cloudy areas. I'm so happy with how this little guy turned out! I'll have to make him some friends at some point. :]

Crafted from colored Premo polymer clay and Swarovski crystal elements. Sold.

That effect looks so good, and I was wondering what type of inks you used? I remember you said you used alcohol based inks, but I wanted to know which ones you used because then they'd probably be oven safe. :P

No ink used in this one, just clay. I've been using Tim Holtz Adirondack alcohol inks, but I imagine any other type of alcohol ink would perform similarly. I actually used Copic markers for my first attempt.

Did you use watercolor ink/copic marker to achieve the black color? I'm guessing you didn't layer black and opal clay like the previous times.

No, no inks this time around, just black and opal clay. It's layered, but in very thin sheets that have been pressed together, instead of one layer sculpted on top of the other.

Oh, I see. That's really neat! I want to try working with opal clay sometime, but I can neither find the time to go to the store or think of things to make with it...

I can see the improvement. The black in the background really pops out against the glittery, rainbow surface which is gorgeous to look at. And honestly, I also really like the gold highlights you've given him. It adds a real nice contrast to the glittery black :).

Love the black opal but I feel like the gold is distracting.  Maybe a black with just a hint of sparkle like in the fore-horns?  Otherwise, absolutely lovely!
